My dad was mowing the high brush out in the back pasture a week or so ago, and as he's always alert while on the big Ford tractor, he managed to stop before he ran over a litter of kittens hidden in the tall grass. He put them in his hat and brought them up to the house and they were in real distress from dehydration, ect. It had been up in the 80's - hot and dry - and they had been without their mother for who knows how long. Mom (a retired OB nurse) mixed up some powdered electrolytes left over from when the puppies little, and tube-fed them all a few cc's, after which they all felt much better - no more panting and the color of their gums improved.

My Aunt Gloria took them all home and is hand raising them. Their eyes and ears are now open and has homes lined up for 4 of the five babies. To follow are some picute she sent me of them from the first day.

If my dad had not found them, the tractor would have killed them, or if they survived that, the Saluki, Dena, would have gotten them. If they managed to make it out of that pasture alive, as ferals they would be risking disease, starvation, or getting flattened out on the busy street a few fields away.

On the one hand, it is a bummer that when their mother comes back the babies won't be there, but on the other hand they will all have a shot at a good life in good homes, having been raised by someone who really loves cats.

Go Mom, Dad and Aunt Gloria!

Thank the Good Lord, a Good Samaritan was behind the wheels of the tractor and that a Guardian Angel was watching over these kittens.

If you want to trap the mom, just take a soiled blanket the kittens are on now and lay it in the same spot where the kittens were. Mom comes back and smells them, she will start crying for them and you can hopefully quickly locate her and trap her using one of her kittens for the bait to get her attention.

Oh, I'm glad your dad saw them in time! They're so tiny! And adorable!
I hope they all grow up strong and healthy.
