As some of you know, Shinobi recently gave birth to her first litter, five kittens. So far everything is going great (they're a week old today), Shinobi is a wonderful mother. I've noticed that she's really quite skinny now though, more than she was before she was pregnant (I can easily feel her ribs when she lies down, and her body has a drawn-in kind of look). I know the kittens are drawing lots of nutrients from her by nursing, and she's still got a healthy appetite, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help her along in gaining back some weight. Is there any particular kind of food I can give her, or should I watch more closely to make sure the kittens give her a break from nursing...? Or is this normal?

It is very normal for a nursing mom to lose weight. Be sure she is on a high quality kitten food and let her eat as much as she wants. Also, you can give her some KMR (kitten milk replacer) with her food if she'll eat it.

Its normal, but be sure she is free feeding a quality kitten food (both dry and canned) while she is nursing.
