What can I do to calm things down?

Recently one of my two young male cats died and they got on really well. I got a new male cat (neutered) of the same age hoping they would get on, unfortunately they don't and they seem to get worse and more aggressive every day.

The new cat is soft and cuddly but I can see he suffers when my original cat is stalking him all the time and the new cat spends most of his time hiding under the bed or behind a couch when I get him to go downstairs. Does anyone have any tips as this is a very sad situation, I don't like to see them upset and hope it doesn't have to come to the point where I take him back to Cat protection

Read the stickies above on cat introductions.

There is one important thing though, give your resident cat the same if more attention than the newcomer. He may still be upset with the loss of his buddy so he needs you more than you think.

I would give it some time before giving up. Most cats work out their relationship in time. As long as they're not really hurting each other I would let them be. I just added a new cat on 3/29 and the 2 young males get along better every day. They do have their moments though.,,,believe me.

Thanks, the problem is that they are starting to hurt each other - they are ripping fur off each other, bleeding and howling at each other
