Broken Nail?

We were doing our usual cat nail clipping and I got to Samba and noticed that his nail had a piece broken. What i mean by this is the side of his nail was broken off from the rest of his nail but still stuck in the skin, like he was shedding his nail and it got stuck. I wouldn't be worried if didn't cause him pain, but he cries every time we touch it so it must be pretty painful. Ever since we noticed he just keeps licking the paw. Is there anything we can do? Has anyone seen this before?

I've seen it in dogs and cats. Keep it clean, put a little ointment on it -though the cat will lick it off so it might be best to distract him with food or play, and just make sure it doesn't get infected.
