Hello,
My kitty Anika has been scratching her ears a little bit with her back paws (she has claws on her back ones), and there are now some little red scratches in them. Does anyone know if I can put neosporan or anything on them, or should I call the vet's office? I was hoping someone might be able to advise me here.
Thanks!

Don't worry about them if they are surface scratches. Cleaning them with water wouldn't hurt, though.

The scratches probably aren't a problem; However, what's causing her to scratch could be a problem--fleas or ear mites, possibly. A vet can tell you whether she has either one, but you can check for them yourself pretty easily.

Evidence of ear mites: Black, coffee-ground looking debris in the ear.
Evidence of fleas: Fleas or flea dirt (black specks) coming out when you comb the cat with a flea comb. Fleas love to hide along the top of the cat's back especially.

Suggestion: Clip her back claws so she can't hurt herself anymore.

My kitty scratches from time to time because she is prone to wax buildup. Every so often I clean her ears with warm almond oil and that seems to do the trick. If she gets really irritated, I take her to the groomers where they clean her ears when they clip her nails.

But yes, if it keeps up, I'd be curious to know why she is scratching...so a vet visit would be helpful.
