Omg!

I just received an email from Petco saying their records show I had purchased a can of the recalled pet food.

I usually buy Friskies (mainly for financial reasons and the prime filets is just about the only food Spyder will eat.

But lately I have been trying a few other brands of wet food and tried the Authority brand. I had only purchased 6 cans of the ground food but one turned out to be the chunks, so I'm assuming it's that...it was just one can and I split it between 3 of the kitties. I don't think they ate very much of it because they don't like the wet food with chunks...this was about 5 weeks ago and all of the kitties seem fine but I am a bit nervous now and I don't have money for blood test if they seem fine..I just had big vet bill over the last month from Rosie.

Any thoughts? Do you think they are ok a month after eating it and it only being the one can?

I am not sure, and trust me i am in the same boat as u, we actually tried special kittie and they ate it for a few days split between 3 kitties tho one pouch and well I took them off of it because stormie got sick, but they all seem fine now but idk some vet was on the tv and said they will show signs but i have read so many things and did a lot of reseach and its a vet working with iams so i just dk hopefully someone can answer this for both of us But I hope ur kitties are ok and well it wasnt that much but u never know I am freaking out to! Sorry i sort of highjacked ur thread but I feel the same way as u do except my kitties were on it for a week then got sick then were fine when i switched there foods I guess its always just best to trust ur instincts my mom kept telling me it was hairballs, but hairball 4-5 times a day, and then the next day it was switched and all was well but that was it! But to u! I hope all is well

i would think with it being this long, you would see signs if something was wrong. But maybe it would be a good idea to get some tests done on them?

If they'd received a life-threatening dose then I'm sure you'd know by now. In the absence of any symptoms I would try not to worry too much but I think if it were me I would take them in to the vet so s/he could do tests to check kidney function - hopefully just to put your mind at rest, and if there has been any damage at least you will be able to plan their diets and care to keep them healthy in the long-term.

This whole thing has been a complete nightmare, much worse for those of you in the US, but even here in the UK I have become paranoid about checking where my wet food comes from and what the ingredients are.

I know you mentioned that you are a bit short of money, but I would get tests run. The sooner you find out the better the chances are of attempting to correct he problem, if there is one. Most of the time, it is too late to do something when cats are unwell. They do not tell us if they are not healthy like dogs do. They hide it inside, cause it is a bit of an instinctual thing, from their hunting instincts. Do not want to show fear. If there is a problem, then there may be something that can be done to correct the problem before your kits lose too much of their renal function.

The cats all still seem fine, thought I know that doesn't really mean all too much, especially what happened with my angel Chuckie last summer.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with any of your replies but now I am more confused than ever, I just received another email from petsmart

Dear PetSmart customer: We recently sent you an email indicating that our PetPerks transaction history shows that you purchased one of the items that was part of the Menu Foods recall. While the recall affected canned and pouched wet dog and cat food manufactured only between December 2006-March 2007, out of abundance of caution and in an effort to ensure we contacted everyone that may have purchased these items from PetSmart or other retailers, we ran the purchase history of our PetPerks members for the past 12 months.

They are not just contacting people who bought the bad lot numbers but everyone who has purchased those brands of food within the last year. So I still don't know for sure if they ate the bad food.

I'll contact the vet Monday and see what they think.

I'm really glad to know that Petsmart & Petco are making the effort to contact customers who might be affected. I'm not sure how long is long enough to wait for symptoms before assuming everything is ok. My impression from reports of animals who have gotten sick was that it happened pretty quickly. Your vet could give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you need to be checking their kidney function values now.......best of luck!!

Since mid February, I had been feeding my "top cat" and oldest cat, Eddie the Nutro Natural pouches. He one each day for about 3 weeks. Last Thursday night I gave ALL my 13 indoor cats a "special treat" and they all shared about 5 or 6 pouches.

I heard the news on Saturday, but didn't get details until Sunday. Of course the pouches I had left over matched the date and bar code if the recalled product.

I stressed all week long looking for any signs of illness, especially in Eddie who had eaten the most . Everything seemed normal and I debated on taking Eddie to the vet to be tested. Yesterday, I decided the waiting game had to end, so I took Eddie to the vet. By a MIRACLE, Eddie showed no signs of any poisoning and it had been 1 week since he last ate the tained food.

Long story short, if you can afford, please take your cat in for testing. It's well worth the peace of mind and my vet only charged $48. IF there is any problem, the can be treated and hopefully the damage could be somewhat reversed.

Get your cats tested if they ate the tainted food.

Although many/most news reports are referencing acute kidney failure, there are indications that chronic kidney failure cases are now on the rise as well. Vetcetera (scroll about half-way down the page to "CRF on the rise, too?") references an article by the Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center and another article http://www.amny.com/news/local/ny-p2...m-topheadlines quotes Cathy Langston, of the Manhattan-based Animal Medical Center's renal-medicine service, to the effect that 25% of the animals diagnosed with kidney failure showed no symptoms to their owners.

If at all possible, get your furkids tested.

Okay I am going to try to stop the panic...

YES if your cats ate the BAD LOTS you can worry ... do this by Watching for signs ( most of the time there are signs)

increased thirst
increased urination
lack of appetite
lack of urination
lethergy( not playing or excessive sleeping( yes the last one may be hard to tell)

If signs are shown get to the vet ASAP

This is a good time to get checked out if your cat is over 7 or 8 for a senior panel of bloodwork .... You may get lucky and find something very early do to this recall ....

We are ALL on edge ... I too got a few email s ... then I remembered Nutro pulled some cans of dog food without wheat or wheat gluten ... I am lucky Kandie was the one who may have eaten tainted food and has CRF already ... she is fine and I am using alternates till this is over

I don't really see any panic in this thread, Jen, just an honest attempt by everyone to do the right thing by their furkids.

I recommended getting the tests done if it is possible. If nothing else, it'll offer piece of mind and, at least in my (admittedly limited) knowledge, cause no harm.

I fed my kittens some of the recalled food for several weeks. 'Though they have been off the food since mid February and are not showing any signs of illness, I had their CBC and chemistry tests done Saturday. Two of the three had Creatinine results that are a cause for concern (not scary results, just worrying levels).

So I continue to recommend testing animals that have eaten the recalled food.

Oh, and the Banefield pet hospitals are offering 25% off the tests and a discount on further care if such is needed, if you bring in proof that your animals ate the recalled food. I'm not sure how this actually works, but the notice went out to the Banefield vets yesterday.
