Someone had a very good point in an earlier post and that is most cats eventually die of kidney failure. We have to start asking why is the reason for that. I don't believe it's entirely down to old age. I do believe there is a strong link to what we are feeding them in the form of ready prepared food and the artificial this, that and the next thing that goes into the production of these foods, not to mention things that cats in the wild would never eat - e.g. wheat gluten, peas, carrots etc.

Couldn't have said it better!! I don't belive peas, carrots, etc. are causing early kidney failure or ailments in our feline friends but "wheat gluten"?!! Maybe somebody can correct me here, but I am under the impression that wheat gluten and foods like corn are simly cheap fillers...wheat gluten being a cheap alternative to a "real" protein source?

That is my impression too. I am going to Petco today to research some better food alternatives for my babies. This has been an eye opener, a very scary eye opener.

This is the website of the list of all cat and dog foods that are recalled so you can check and see if you are feeding any of them.
....
But at least we have the master list now !
This is NOT the full list - there are other companies who have recalled their foods who are not listed on menufoods website, please check with the website of the food you feed to be sure people!
Petsmart have a list that lists additional foods, but not all of the ones on the menufoods website so I guess for now, it is a check everything situation

From our news, you can get more info on whether the food you feed is included by calling 1-800-882-1591, 1 866 463-6738 and 1-866 895-2708

They have also announced that it may not be just the Ontario plant that was affected but two other plants so please keep checking to make sure they do not include more batch/lot numbers

The lists so far

Menufoods
Purina
Hills Science Diet
P&G - Iams & Eukanuba (states to also check the individual company websites for batch numbers etc)
Petsmart's list of foods recalled

I am so glad that Oscar doesn't care for wet food that much. He eats Purina Indoor formula dry food and every once in a while Friskies or 9 Lives canned food for a treat and then it's only half a can at a time. Just to be safe though, we may skip the canned food until we find out what's going on......

Many thoughts going out to those of you who are concerned about your kitties well being.

I'm sooo scared! I just checked and all my nutro wet pouches are included in the recall!! I'll call my vet tmr to see what should be done but i have some questions-

Someone said to look for diluted urine- what exactly does that mean????

Jeez- Nutro is a pretty expensive product and I bought it thinking it's one of the best products to give to my cats!

Is that the only way to tell if its diluted pee?

All 6? That will be a CHALLENGE since at least 2 cats FREAKS out when I put them in carriers. Think it'll work if I bring in urine samples from litter boxes?? Another issue is that I'm not supposed to have 6 cats where I live (county allows up to 4) so I'm afraid if I take all 6 to my vet that somehow I'll be busted.

I live in a one bedroom apt. Heidi stays in the bedroom... I could put one cat in the bathroom for a couple hours but how do I know when he/she'll need to pee so I can put him in bathroom with a litterbox and not wait all day??? That'd take a couple days to do and some cats will NOT be happy about this..

If you're looking for a small brand that is processed and canned in-house and not shipped off to any larger conglomerates, try Evanger's. Actually, I think Evanger's does the canning for a lot of the "smaller" more pricey brand as I understood it when I went to their facility. It's right in the area for me
I don't feed large conglomerated grocery or pet superstore brands since I discovered that they're all ultimately formulated by the same people at the same place. They're just distributed by different companies.

It's a good option for me, since raw is NOT an option at this point (lack of freezer, counter space only big enough for a half-cutting board...ya, it'd be tough)

Think it'll work if I bring in urine samples from litter boxes?? Can my vet test them from that?

I can scoop out all the urine and have them all tested- hopefully they will be able to test all my cats from that so I don't have to put them thru the trauma of going to vet for this?

not unless you have non absorbing litter and a drip tray ... maybe the vet will make a housecall??

unfortunately I don't think they can do tests on clumps. I know when I had to bring in samples to my vet in the past, we had to have these pellets that didn't absorb anything, lock the cat in with them, and wait until the cat used them...let me just say that there was a lot of yelling as the bladder filled and the urge to use the litter pan with the pellets was low. Then you need to pour the urine into a collection and bring it in.

If you're really concerned, call your vet and ask...it's the best thing any of us can do.

Mine are sharing a box but the amount since yesterday of pee clumps appears normal for them. This is affecting so many pet owners, I really hope there will be some legal action placed against the manufacturers for this!!
