I have two, one on my right ankle and one on my left breast. Neither one was particularly painful. I got my first one, the hummingbird on my breast, 13 years ago and I'm actually tired of it already. I got the cat on my ankle three years ago and I still like it. Unfortunately, the ink will fade and run over time, so the tattoo will not be as pretty as it originally was...the edges will not remain sharp and the colors won't look as clear and pretty (think about your grandfather's service tattoos.) This is something to consider if your tat is in a place that isn't normally covered by your clothing. Another thing to consider.... Is your tat in a place that could be a surgical site? I work in surgery, and as a surgical assistant, it is my job to sew up the surgical incision. It is very difficult to re-align the tattoo if the surgeon needs to cut through it for a hernia or appendectomy incision! Believe me...I've done it and it isn't fun!!! Each time I've had to do it, the surgeon had to really agonize about where to place the incision, so that we wouldn't compromise the tattoo too badly. However, it sometimes made the surgery harder to do because of the patients's physical anatomy. How's that for a little trivia?

Well, my advice would be
DON'T DO IT!!!

Sorry, I think they are ugly and stupid. Your skin is the only one you will have the rest of your life. Ever see an old guy with an old tattoo? They look gross, muted and faded.
How will your tattoo look when you are 50, 60, 70? Embarrassing? Permanent ink for a passing trend?
Seems silly to me. But it is your skin.
No need for y'all to attack me for this because I won't be back.

My advice is to have someone in the room with you and hold thier hand while they are doing it. It helps alot with the pain. It stings alot.

This is my friend, Holly, and her tat...

This is Holly with the artist, Michael Godard at one of his galleries, who created the painting for Dishwalla's (my fav band
)cd cover...and was so touched by Holly having gotten a tatoo of his artwork, that he gave her a print of the original as a gift...

The band was also very moved by Holly's love for them that they wrote a song for her...its amazing!

I appreciate your comment, as tattoos aren't for everyone.

I'm not bothered about how it will look when I am older. I am 26, and chose not to get a tattoo done when all my friends were having them done - as I don't think I was ready then.

Now though, my inspiration has been peoples great talent with art and creativity, and I am a very creative person myself.

I think tattoos are beautiful, but everyone has their own opinion of course.
Most of mine are in places that are covered by clothing so if I dont want them shown when they're 'old and ugly' they wont be.

here are my 4 in order and justins newest one. He has 3 but i don't have good pictures of his other ones.

this is my first and it's in a bad place.
It didn't hurt as much as you would think it would, other than when he'd wipe the ink off, considering it was freshly shaved...

my second is like the singer Anastacia's but i changed it a little so it wasn't exactly like hers. It is a symbol for the meaning of my name.

This is a tribute to my grandmother who died in 2004. It is her name "FloraLee" in flowers

This one I just liked.. haha I got it airbrushed on my arm when I was in Florida last year and fell in love with it.. The symbol is kanji for resurrection because there were some complications when I was born and my mother and I were dead for a few seconds annnd it's also what my name means. lol

Annnd to end my novel,
here is justins..

I have to go with everyone else and warn you to make sure that you see work these people have done and if you can see it healed. lol A girl I used to work with got a tattoo from a friend of her brothers who has a studio in his attic and it looked awesome so Justin and I decided to go and another girl i work with went with her boyfriend. Well mine turned out good (the dragon) and our friends boyfriends looks good but hers is messed up and Justin has scarring from where the guy pushed too hard when he started bleeding. So now we need to find some place who will fix it.

I would have to agree with the eatting before hand... AND get a good night sleep the night before.

I made the stupidest mistakes when I got my first tat... I was 17, And i had been partying all night the night before. I went in to get my tat exhausted (not hung over but dead tired) and I hadn't eatten anything all day. Of course, I had to pick a painful spot for my tat... a 5 inch sun on my spine....
Its kinda embaressing but, halfway through the outline... I told the guy "I think I need a break" the next thing I remember was everyone standing around me asking me if I was ok. I had passed out... Fortunatly the guy had caught me before I fell out of the chair... I felt soooo stupid.

That tattoo has now turned into one that takes up half of my back. And let me just warn you... The worst place was on my ribs... You can feel the differance between ON the rib bone itself and in between the rib bones...

On last warning.. Tattoos can become addictive. I thought I would be finished after I completed my back piece... Now I'm working on a new tat....

Maybe you guys have some suggestions... memorial tat for my cats.... I want something I can add to for each on of my babies as they head to the rainbow bridge. I just lost my cat Howard 2 weeks ago. I like stars, suns, moons, flowers, (orchids are my favorite) any ideas....?

LOL yes I have to agree that they are VERY addicting... If i didn't still live at home and had lots of money I would have a lot more than I have and I don't even like needles!

I passed out after my first one and I had just eaten, after that I made sure I aways had a gatorade or soda with me.

my advice about tattoo's is that if you are going to get one.
Then make sure it is something very personal to you. something that you wont tire of.
things to aviod are boyfriends, girlfriends, Errr, bands.(great looking tatoo, but will she really feel the same about that band in a few years?)

just make sure its somethings that means something to you. or even how you feel about life at this point, and put them where they dont show in a normal office style clothing.

I understand what you're saying...however, Holly is from England and saved up her money to make the trip to the United States 2 years ago to see Dishwalla for the first time live. She spent 6 hours in the tattoo artist's chair (it might have been more, I can't recall) the day before the show and proudly showed off her tribute to them...it was really very cool. She and another friend, Thom, who made the trip as well, sat up on the stage during the performance...it was a wonderful time for them! If you look closely at the tat, there are all sorts of symbols in it...blood, sweat, etc...its really very special. Thing is, when you're a 'Whacknut' (which is what we call ourselves who are fans of this amazing group of musicians), its more than just listening to the music...it becomes a soundtrack of one's life...its very personal and moving in ways I myself never knew music could be. Holly has posted on the band's singer/songwriter's (the JR Richards in my own siggy quote)myspace that she's ready for another tat and is wondering if his soon to be released solo debut will have anything worthy of a tattoo!

Sicycat, I can't help wondering -- is the little suitcase with the heart on it a reference to the old song, "Have Love, Will Travel?"

I have no tattoos, partly because I think there's a fairly fine aesthetic line that's just too easy to slip across... and partly because I'm commitment-phobic!

However... one symbol that really has come to mean a lot to me is the gingko leaf, and I actually have thought about getting one done someday... very small, no more than a square inch, and in a place I can choose to keep covered. But where? Any suggestions?

oh i understand i really do. I have just seen so many people who get band tattoo;s
who years later, wish they had never gotten them. It does like she had a great time
that is really nice.

hm 6 hours? at once? or in 3 different vists? it all depends on who the skin reacts.
the tattoo on my leg took 2 trips for them to finish up.

Tattoos, like everything in my opinion are all in the way you look at them. I mean yourself and your own tattoos (in my opinion what others think about my personal tattoos is irrelevant unless its a loved one). Someone could get a band tattoo at 20 and and at 40 decide they wish they hadn't gotten it because they aren't interested in that band anymore. Or they could cherish it as being a symbol of a memory in their life that at one point meant a lot to them. Tattoos mean something different to everyone. To me they are an expression of myself, art, and a visible map of the story of my life.

Something else to think about when it comes to older people these days with ink. Lets say you see someone thats out.. 70 year old man, tattoos faded and all yucky. 50 years ago when that 70 year old man got his tattoo it was most likely not in a professional studio with the best tattoo equipment and inks. All tattoos fade, but with care they will hold up extremely well. One last point.. tattoos are not a passing trend. They are a form of art that has been growing for years. It is only now being called a "trend" because more people (including women) are choosing to express themselves through their body art for the first time. Tattoo art may be new in comparison to painting or classic art but it has been around for quite some time.. IE: Sailor Jerry.

Hey guys,

thanks for all the great advice and great pics too!

I am really looking forward to getting my tattoo done, and it will be from the top of my arm over my left shoulder. I chose this part of my body as it means I can still cover it up when I have to!

6 hours...all at once...as I said, she was in the states for a very short while & wanted to have it done in time for the show...
