When Tucson had to be put down, there really wasn't any choice. He was in excruciating pain, and it just happened so unexpectedly. I have to say that without a doubt it was one of the saddest, shocking experiences of my life. But in the end it was done for his wellbeing. It's hard to think about it, but in the end he was at peace. When the time came of Tucson being brought out all drugged, I stopped crying because I wanted our last moments together to be peaceful. And it was, I'm so sorry. . I'm so sorry you are having to go through this with Otis.

There is no right or wrong way to do this.

When my first cat Manny was put to sleep, I was at school, and didn't even know what was happening. That I regret and have anger over, but I had no choice.
I have seen several rescue kitties put to sleep both at the vets and at the rescue. it not a nice experience at all whatsoever, but I wanted/needed to be with every single one of them.

Whatever you choose is okay.. no right nor wrong. I know some people that get physically ill when even thinking about this topic, and she would never be able to be in the same room.

I'm so sorry.

I was there for my 20 year old cat with CRF when she was put to sleep at our house. I do not regret being there at all. I would not have wanted her to be without someone she knew when she passed on.

I haven't had to make that decision, fortunately. When my sweet Whiskers passed, while he died in the animal hospital, he went before the decision had to be made. I think I would probably want to be there to ease his passing and let him know how much I loved him. However, I realize how difficult it would be. Please know that we are thinking of you and feel your pain. It's not an easy thing to do.

He's not doing well at all, but he's got enough spunk where he'll probably fight and I'm afraid that if I see him fight, I'll regret putting him down. My Dad said he would take him for me if need be. For those who were there for the last moments did you regret being there? And for those who chose not to be there, did you regret not being there?
Just thinking of you today, I am sending hugs and prayers for you and Otis.

Thanks again for all the replies. I couldn't bear to take him but my Dad took him for me and promised to stay with him. I'm just glad I was able to have a good year and a half with him. The hardest part was cleaning up today. I had to pick up all the tin foil (the couches were covered because he would pee on them), put away all the meds and fluids, and wash all of the blankets he would sleep/pee on. Not an easy task but at least I know he's better off now.

I am glad that your dad was able to go and be with Otis.

I know how hard this is for you, but please know that Otis is gonna be healthy once more.

I am sending you hugs and prayers from Mississippi.

Sorry, I was thinking about you this morning. I know what you mean about picking up Otis's things. He's at peace now.

I am glad he had someone there for him. The cleaning up is so hard though - I have sometimes had to leave things for a day (I normally make those kind of apps for after work, so not normally in a fit state that evening), it makes things even more real. Sorry for your loss, Otis is free from pain and suffering though, and he was lucky enough to have an owner who didn't want to see him suffer any more, and could make that final act of love and kindess for him

thinking of you and your family, today must have been a tough one
we are all here for you

Maybe you could start a new thread, as a tribute to your special kitty ?

Remember Our Love

I was chosen today
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

What a wonderful poem, thanks for sharing it.

I know that will help me when I am missing my beloved Sambo.
