I had heard of this in relation to Ecstacy, because X gives you the feeling of being really thirsty. There have been a few cases of young people at raves drinking themselves to death on water because they couldn't quench their thirst.

How stupid are these people who came up with this contest? If you're going to do something like that, you've got to make sure that it actually IS safe. Don't just assume it is just because it's water.
I seen it on the news last night... I can't believe the things people do to get something free

It was on Fox News. She drank 3 gallons in an hour or two. The idea was to hold it without going to the bathroom. How sad!

Yea that's what I heard on my radio station this morning. The radio people were quite upset because they said this is something they could have done themselves too and they would have had no idea that water could be fatal!

THe only other time I remember hearing about this was a frat boy dieing after an initiation!

I feel so bad for this womens kids.
This realy freaked me out because last year I played a card game were if you lost you had to drink a big glass of water. Basically I ended up drinking 6 glasses of water in about 30 minutes and ended up puking and getting soooo sick. I guess Ill never play that again.

I don't like water, I hardly ever drink it, I mostly just drink iced tea and I drink a lot of milk.

I feel sure that she had to sign some kind of waiver or something, you usually do for stuff like contests.

Technically I don't think that its the radio stations fault. All they did was set up the contest. No one was forced to participate. She signed up, she drank the water, she held her pee. My guess is that she didn't consult her doctor first either. While it is sad, and I do feel badly for her children, I don't think that its the radio stations fault.

If someone who had signed up for an eating contest (i.e. hotdogs) and somehow ruptured his stomach or something and died, should the eating contest be sued?

I agree with you, anyone who signs up for a contest or whatever has decided to do that on their own, no body made them.

It was the part of the contest that said they couldn't urinate that made the water eventually become toxic to her system. Your body naturally wants to stay in balance - too much water and you're body will try to get rid of some, either by urinating or sweating or throwing up. If you're used to drinking a lot of water, your body has gotten used to the balance and can keep up with it.

Just listen to your body - it will tell you if you need more or less water.

DH said he has heard of this and I was talking with a friend who said it made sense to her (bio-chemist major or something like that).

I am very sad for the woman and her family.

It is so sad as she was doing it for her kids.

If you are drinking water in relation to normal thirst and not drink a lot at one time, you are not at risk. Gatorade was formulated to avoid the problem with water intoxication.

Very sad but also, I have to say, incredibly stupid. Do people not engage their brain before they do stuff like this? If there was a contest to jump off a cliff and see who reached the bottom first would people take part? What a pointless death.

edited to add - I do think the radio station are at least partly to blame (morally if not legally) for encouraging people to do something potentially dangerous without - seemingly - fully explaining the danger.
