Anyone else NOT have a cell phone? - Page 2

I don't.

I don't see a reason for cell phones other than to keep in a car in case of an emergency, but now cars come with 'on star'.

I figure if someone wants to get hold of me they can leave a message at my home on my answering machine and I'll call them back. I refuse to be a slave to a telephone.

Plus I think it's dangerous to talk on the phone while driving a car, and I find it deeply annoying when a phone rings in a movie theater or concert hall, or I'm sitting next to someone at a restaurant or on a bus and they are sitting there talking on the phone. Ridiculous!

I don't really like cell phone's either, but I do think it would be really nice to have one, in case of emergencies. I work late nights, and if I ever had a problem it would be nice to have a phone to call work, and call for help. Trying to find a pay phone in Los Angeles is very hard these days. They keep removing them. I also think they would be nice for long distance calling.

I too get extremely annoyed with people when I see them driving down the street on their cell. I even get annoyed when I see them walking down the street on their cell. I just went thru a situation this past week, where having a cell would have been wonderful, when there was an outage. I couldn't communicate with anyone, until I went to work.

I have a cell phone which I use when I go out because I can never find payphones. It's an older Samsung, and it doesn't have any of the camera/internet doodads, so it was pretty cheap.

My inlaws bought my husband and me cell phones the first Christmas we were married since when he was stationed on a boat or out of state for training we had no other way to talk to each other. With free mobile to mobile it works out well, but now that he is at a land station and I see him everyday it seems like such a waste to spend $90+ a month (and a huge bill for going way over our minutes when our rollover minutes finally ran out ) on them instead of just getting a landline plan with unlimited long distance for half that. It is a nice convenience to have when running errands or for safety purposes though…and now I would probably miss having one a little in those situations were I to get rid of it.

I have a cell phone- as a single woman in one of the most deadly cities in the US (memphis), i'd be crazy not to, especially since you can never find pay phones anywhere anymore. It's just not safe to not have one around here. I however do not have cable or anything like that. I have the internet because i'm in college- so it is a must. Also, i've noticed that in numerous ways, if you can find a good cell phone plan- it is cheaper to take out the home phone and just use a cell phone.

The main reason, that I keep a cell, is my working hours. If my dad has to take Mom to the hospital or, something happens to the kids, I can be reached (I check my voice mail on breaks and lunches). In addition, I'm trying to buy a house and I can return my agent's or lender's calls, on my lunch break.

There is a website: www.gethuman.com. This site was started by a man who was frustrated with the "menu's" that most companies have nowaday. There are many many companies 800#'s listed with steps on bypassing the automated systems and getting a human person quicker. I have found this website to be very helpful.

Both DH and I have cell phones. I didn't give my number to LJS, they don't need it. My boss does have DH's number but was told to NEVER call it unless I was having a seizure.
That's the main reason we got it. For my seizures. I had one while showering one day and couldn't get ahold of DH, and was freaking out. I fell out of the shower and don't remember anything after that. Somehow I managed to call my MIL and she came over and together we tried to get ahold of FIL who was with DH. When we finally got ahold of him DH was gone off somewhere. So We decided that we both need one just in case it happens again so we can get in touch all the time. We also have a land line but rarely ever answer it unless it's someone we want to talk to, and then they have to leave a message before we pick up.

I don't either. By choice, though. I just don't want one.

They cover my area, but they're quite a bit more expensive than some of the other plans I've seen.

The other thing is, I would start with one of the prepaid plans rather than a cheaper phone on contract, it may seem like more of an expense right now, but if you decide that you can't afford the phone, buying out the contract can be very expensive

I've got a cell and I'd be lost without it! I don't use it all that much, but I like to be able to make a phone call NOW, not when I get to the nearest phone

I am amazed at hwo expensive phone plans are in the US. The cheapest one I could find was close to $50/month - for a phone I don't use much!! In Australia, you could get $10/month plans!

I've just gone onto a "family plan" with a friend, and that makes our bills about $40-45/month which is still quite high.

That is most likely because the company that runs the student loans placed almost all the reps on an incentive program where they are paid per call. The reps are rushing the borrowers so they can get to the next call. I am not on this program because the area I work in is what is called an assist line. We answer the reps questions about an account and take the dreaded calls where someone asks for a supervisor. Our calls can be a few seconds or an hour or two. Since they implemented this program, customer service has gone down and the sup calls have gone way up. Cheap company!!!!

I think it was more based on how long you are stuck in an automated system and wait times etc, companies were also downgraded for making people listen to statements like these while on hold for a rep

I don't have one! I don't like them, it's so horrible to look around and practically everyone is sitting there txting...it's so anti-social! Now people ask me for my cellphone number, and when I say I don't have one, they're really surprised. *sigh*
