I was just informed that cats and dogs don't have the mental compassity to be jealous of one another. I wish someone would tell my dogs and my cat that. Because apparently they don't know it yet. Shoot I was just petting Macy and Lilly came running from the livingroom to push herself between me and Macy so that I could only pet her. I swear people are dumb sometimes and why do they feel the need to tell you what they know. This same person told me that rat terriers aren't a real breed so therefore my dog Lilly is a mixed breed and that she would never be a good dog. This is one of my dad's brothers telling me this. Should have known he was a few bricks shy of a full load he hates cats. Informed me that I would have to get rid of my cat and my dog. and Then got mad because I wouldn't move to town and won't disown my dad. Idiot

people who say that ....usually don't have animals....because anyone who has cats or dogs know that they have a mental capacity to do a lot!!

My cat monkey gets very jealous when I pay attention to dh and not her..lol she will come in between us and start meowing...now you can't tell me that she isn't jealous

LOL! They haven't seen my kittens get jealous over who's in my lap at the moment. Half the time they start a pushing war and both fall off my lap.

And god don't get me started on the rabbits! Mocha is a jealous little fiend. She gives me the cutest little angry looks when she's locked in her pen and I'm playing with Fey and Sprite. She spends half the day staring through the pen walls glaring at them. And if Loki trys to flirt with them she smacks him on the nose!

Oh and speaking of mental capacity, isn't it funny when an animal knows it's doing something wrong and then tries to cover it up? Fey used to slide a barrier aside, hop in, and close it behind her. And the kittens have the "Who, me???" look down pat.

in a pile of open toed shoes!
I wouldn't waste my breath on someone simply not worth speaking too.
Save yourself the stress & aggrivation.... everyone knows that animals have feelings, and it's obvious to see when they are jealous of one another.
You can read it all over their faces....LuckyGirl is not shy in hiding her feelings for her daddy, and GOD FORBID he says hi and gives Louie kisses before her!
She gets a hurt & offended look on her face, but you don't think she'll get up to greet daddy, nope, she makes him come to her!

Maybe the guys intentions were totally out of line but I can really see where he is coming from. If you think about dog pack behavior it actually makes some sense.

If a dog think he is above you or the other pet (dog/cat) then when he sees that subordinate member getting attention he is going to push his way to get a pat because he 'knows' he is leader and should get the priveleges.

We may interpret it as jealousy but it just may be the pecking order they have.

Sometimes I think they feel jealousy, but once I put my human feelings aside I realize most of the time its just establishing their hierarchy

The other night Mom was awakened by Topaz smacking Ari. Why? He was closer to Mom than she was!

It's impossible to know what an animal you can't communicate is feeling!! They may exhibit signs of the human emotion "jealousy", but the cat may not have the mental process to say "Lily's getting more attention than me, I'm going to go and push in because I want attention".

They certainly to seem a possess higher thought process than say... a fish!

I once had a college prof (Psychology prof) say that the only reason why we believe animals have emotions is because we impress them upon our cat or dog.

I really had a hard time believing this at the time. Even more so now after I came across some article that cats have emotion in the same part of the brain as humans do.

Ha! I feed a neighborhood stray and my cat is jealous over that, not to mention if I were to have another one in the house!
