Hello All,

My cat has been eating normally, but recently has increased his water consumption.

I also think (not 100% sure) that he's been going to the bathroom less than usual. He still goes, just not as much as a few weeks ago.

He plays, eats, and looks fine, but I know that increased water consumption can be a sign of bad health. It's not hot anymore, so I don't think he's drinking to stay cool.

My biggest fear is that he's got a blockage somewhere; but wouldn't he have stopped eating if this were the case?

Anyone had any experiences with this?

Thanks.

Often when a cat starts drinking alot more then normal its a sign of kidney problems. I would have your cat checked by the vets. Blood work can determine if its the sign of kidney failure starting.Or it might just be the start of a bladder infection.

I've also read that diabetic cats increase their water consumption. Probably best to have tests run - liver & kidney function, blood sugar, etc.

Diabetics DO start drinking much more water, but they also flood the litter box with urine, as the sugar is spilling out in their pee. If he is drinking a lot and not peeing much, I would be more worried about his kidneys and/or a blockage. Do you feed your cats fish flavored foods often? I have heard that too much fish in a cats diet can cause blockage, especially in nuetered males. I would make a vet appt ASAP before things get more serious for your boy. Sending hugs and prayers.

Hello All,

I'm happy to say that my cat (Cosmo) has just gone to the bathroom. It looks like his constipation has passed. No pun intended.

I gave him wet food for the past two days. That may have loosened him up a bit. I usually only feed him dry food, but I guess I'll have to introduce some wet food a few times each week.

Thanks to all who replied to my original post. Sometimes, owning a pet can be nerve racking.

Cheers.

If you can get him on wet food every day, it's even better. Wet food diet is much better for your kitty.
