oh yeah when i got my cat from a rescue she practically had no hair on her belly and as it grew she licked it off and it was bare, but then it grew back and she left it, i found what helped was a feliway diffuser, you plug it in the wall, its magic!

can't the vet put some cream on her belly (maybe antibiotic cream) to help the infection and put a dressing over it? that way maybe she wouldn't be able to lick it and it would heal, hope she gets well soon!
it brilliant to hear he's doing better, now i think you definately don't have to do an amputation, is he an indoor or outdoor cat?
and if he isn't in pain can't you just leave him and let it heal in place, it might make him a bit handicapped if you know what i mean but if he can move his tail...

i think you should put him out of his pain and get it amputated, i don't think any creams would out bones back in place, and it would help his balance and posture afterwards. or go to another vet and ask them what else is possible...
