I always warm my food up...Ive never tried to give it cold.  Its easy, I portion it out into a plastic tupperware...nuke it for 15 sec, stir, nuke 15 more sec, stir this is for 4oz for 2 cats, less microwave time for less food.

The most effective technique I have found at behavioral correction with my kittens, believe it or not, is growling.  Like if they start getting to nosy when I'm eating, or if they go after our orchid, I just get down at eye level and give a little growl...kind of like a deep hum, closed mouth...

As for the scratching issue, are you clipping their claws? If I keep mine clipped they rarely hurt at all...and definitely no punctures.

Silicone muffin trays would work good for this for actual meal portions

I've started microwaving the food instead of the tap water deal...it is MUCH less hassle.  15 sec seems just right for 4 oz (for 2 cats). Next batch I will get throw-away plastic ware for packaging. It won't be able to get much simpler than that...thanks TCS
