Fetching is fun! My older cat fetches, but I never trained him...he just does it. My kitten, however, she just prefers to pounce and kill the toys. Here is a video of Louis (my older one) playing fetch!

It sounds like he's found somewhere to eat! I don't think he's purposely being unaffectionate towards you, but it does sound like he's become somewhat indifferent. I would consider keeping him locked inside for a week or so and seeing how it goes. I would also make sure he is wearing a collar...
