Honestly, I would consult a veterinarian. Fluid therapy can be a life saving procedure and better to be safe than sorry.

It looks like, depending on the type of bacteria causing your infection, it is possible to transmit it to you cat and vice versa. But only through direct contact it seems. So wash your hands often!!

There's not really many things you can give a kitten that small. If you don't treat, than the kitten might die. If you do, than the kitten might die. I'm sure the doctor made the best decision they could in an emergency situation like that. But really the only way to know exactly what happened...
