I can't take it anymore. I just jumped on FB to check on something and there was a news feed from The Daily Dalek. (I know, I can't help it) Anyway, apparently Japan is doing a re-boot of Sherlock with female leads. First Ghostbusters, then Doctor Who and now Sherlock. If anyone tries to re-boot Lucifer with a female (or anyone other than Tom Ellis-well, maybe David Tennant) I'm going to start throwing things. It won't help, but it will make me feel better.

I saw something about them redoing Oceans 11 (I think) with all female leads, too. It's getting on my nerves. I watched the new Ghostbusters out of morbid curiosity. I'll never get those hours back.
Baby's coming tomorrow. A day and a half of useless contractions on top of everything else has made up my mind for me. I'm definitely done. I can't seem to get my phone to connect to the hospital Wi-Fi and I don't have internet on it otherwise, so you probably won't see me for a couple days.

Meanwhile I'm actually excited that the new doctor is female. I'm a huge fan and a time Lord changing gender is not new.

I dont see what all the fuss is about concerning the doctor's gender. Time lords can literally change into ANYONE, they aren't limited by gender lol.

I refuse to watch the new Ghostbusters out of respect for Akroyd and honor of Ramis.
Just wait, soon we'll have the story of Queen Arthera and Merlina. Or the Winchester sisters. This PC crap is driving me crazy. There is nothing wrong with a good female lead, IF the story calls for it.

It's not that I totally oppose a female Doctor. If they had done it years ago, when they first hinted at it, then it wouldn't have bothered me so much. But I think they are doing it solely to be Politically Correct, and that bothers me.

And all the crap about Disney supposedly whitewashing everything is insane. Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Brave, etc are stories from white countries. It makes sense that the leads would be white. They might have a point if Jasmine, Mulan, or Pocahontas were portrayed as white, but they're not.

Eh, to each their own. I personally don't see it that way. In my opinion, it's about time the doctor was female!

Women make up more than 50% of the population. The percentage of female leads in movies and TV shows is WAY lower than that. And we got used to it, so now we think a female lead is weird. Internalized sexism is a heck of a drug. It will probably be awkward as TV show and movie makers try to figure stuff out. But hopefully it'll eventually settle into an equitable arrangement. Women are people too, and, oh, sometimes do interesting things just like men do.

Like I said, I have no problem with a female lead. But to re-boot something with a female lead is just wrong. Like Sherlock. When has Sherlock ever been female. It can't be. Not unless you want to pretend the books never happened. That was what I was getting at. Don't re-boot the classics using female leads, and don't re-write the great books.

My door is fixed :yess: The problem was the deadbolt. The key part worked fine. The locksmith took that out and tested it. The deadbolt was stuck somehow. The locksmith replaced it with a spare one he had.
That's great. I'm glad it was an easy fix. Did he have to replace the entire thing or just the bolt? If he did the whole thing, don't forget to give a copy of the key to the landlord.

Except that women were underrepresented in all the old books, movies, and TV shows too! So if we stuck with them women would still be underrepresented. And sometimes it's kinda fun. What if Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to make a female lead but didn't think anyone would buy his books or take him seriously (not like women had the freedom to do stuff back then anyway)? Doesn't hurt to use a little imagination.

I agree that the general trend of reboots is getting annoying. I'm sure someone can come up with an original story, jeez.

No, there's a good argument that they're doing it for three reasons:
  1. Viewership hasn't been as high as it should be lately and Chibnall (and his overlords at BBC) thought the show needed shaking up.
  2. Chibnall has worked with Jodie Whittaker before and is aware of what a great actor she is and knows he can work with her.
  3. Jodie Whittaker absolutely nailed her audition.
Ghostbusters and Sherlock are different. Those are definitely remakes that have no reason for existing besides catering to people who think everything should be remade in the feminine mode. One evidence of this is that the new version of Ghostbusters has been universally panned, for artistic reasons and not because the stars are female. In other words, the producers and director didn't really have their hearts in it; they didn't bother to do a good job. As for Sherlock, isn't that the one set in Victorian England (unlike the one set in modern New York, with a female Dr. Watson)? For that to even conceivably work with the historical realities the character would have to be changed beyond all recognition.

No, Jasmine, Mulan, and Pocahontas aren't portrayed as white, they merely perpetuate the abnormally thin body of a Barbie doll as the ideal of feminine beauty.

Maybe it simply I don't like Jodie Whittaker, but in all honesty, I've only seen her in Broadchurch and I didn't like Beth. On the same note, I couldn't stand Rory. I wished many times he would stay dead. However he was decent in Broadchurch and terrific in Legends of Tomorrow. So it may just be the character Beth I didn't like. I have every intention of giving her a chance. It will be interesting to see how the part is played. This is the 13th incarnation and if you go by the old episodes, this is the Valeyard incarnation.
