Hi, I'm new here, found this site when doing researches and thought it would be a good idea to ask for opinions.
My baby boy Sam is 6 years old and he's never been sick before.
On March 25th we took him to the vet for his annual wellness exams and distemper vaccine. We request every year a compete blood work to always be sure he's ok. The vet said the result was normal, he used to have white blood cells count a little high before, she said probably an allergy (he has them sometimes) or because he's just like that.
This time, white blood cells count was normal. And: red blood cells count, hematocrit and hemoglobin was a shade over the top. Total protein: a smidgen high. She said we should not worry about it, unless something happened.
A few day later, on March 30th I noticed that he was a little too sleepier than usual but it was raining and he sleeps practically all day when it rains. I kept observing him. Next day, a Friday he was still quiet and my husband and I were already worried so we called the vet and they said, bring him in tomorrow (Saturday, April 1st).
That day he seemed to be feeling better but still, we took him in and he's Doctor wasn't there and this doctor exams him and she said he had pain in his shoulder area and hip and legs area. Did fecal exams (negative). She suggested X-rays and I said sure. So they did X-rays and she said nothing abnormal. So she said he had some kind of muscular injury and gave him an injection (Eloxijet) and prescribed buprenorphine. Next day, Sunday he woke up feeling really well and as I didn't want him to be in pain, I gave him the buprenorphine (0.1ml as prescribed). After that he looked like he was in a coma. He was so sedated he would not even go eat or drink water or bathroom. I had to take him to the bathroom. My husband said to me not to give another dose that day and call the vet in the morning, so I did. She said stop giving it to him. Next day he was at least going to the bathroom by himself and eating and drinking a little bit. After a few days, he didn't want to drink or eat again, so called the doctor and insisted they saw him, although they were booked, I got an appointment Thursday, April 6th. His usual doctor was there and examined him and she said he had no pain. I said, but he's crying when you touch him and she said he was just not happy that she was touching him. She said there was nothing clinically wrong with him.
She prescribed mirtazapine as appetite stimulant and gave him a dose (1/4 every 3 days) and on the way home he started meowing like crazy and when we got home he ate a lot of food which I thought it was good. Then he lay down and I noticed he was shaking his head a bit and twitching his ear and whiskers and breathing really fast. I freaked out and called them and all she said is that mirtazapine shouldn't do that. After like an hour those things stopped and he was breathing normal. So this was second medication that scared us.
Urine test showed protein in urine. So she did another test and I just talked to her and she said it's not a considerable amount of protein.
But, since yesterday his appetite has declined and I'm sure he is in pain. He cries to get up and sit his butt down. He wants to play but he can't. He looks at places and wants to jump but he can't. He's been sleeping a lot or just lying down.
Does anybody know what this could possibly be?
I just called them again and trying an appointment with the other Doctor, the one who sad he has pain. At this point my husband and I are desperate.
Thanks in advance.
