Let's say there's a possibility that you and your cats might become stranded on a deserted island for awhile, and the kitty first aid kit that you had the foresight to prepare washes ashore with you.

What would you consider to be a 'must have' in that kit?  Not to take the place of regular veterinary care, of course, but just some items that might come in handy for minor ailments and whatnot, or to help tide you over until you can get in to see the vet.

We'll be updating our hurricane supplies soon for this year's season, and thought it might be nice to set up a basic medicine cabinet/first aid kit for our cats like we do for us in case of a disaster, natural or otherwise. ;-)

The AVMA has a disaster prepardness guide with suggestions on what to pack in an emergency kit:

https://ebusiness.avma.org/files/productdownloads/STWF_English.pdf (a Spanish version is here)

The ASPCA has these:

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/disaster-preparedness

http://www.aspcapro.org/sites/default/files/ready_pets_brochure.pdf

If a pet requires daily medicine, that needs to be included in a safety kit as well as needed supplies (syringes, needles to give sub q fuids, etc). Medicine that requires refrigeration is a tricky one since you can't buy extra of it and store it away in a safety kit. A written prescription from a vet would be better so you can go to any pharamcy or a vet to get more medicine during an emergency.

Check the safety kit regularly and replace anything that has expired.

Cool!  Thanks.  And we just happen to have some coconut oil.  It sure comes in handy, as well as the Manuka honey. :-)

Just curious, what is the super glue for?

Oh, that's extremely helpful!  Thanks bunches!

The AVMA guide was also a very helpful reminder that we need to get serious about getting better organized.  We live right down the street from some petrochemical refineries, but it's been so long since there's been a major accident, we've gotten complacent, and forgot that we should be prepared at all times to shelter in place or evacuate at a moment's notice. ;-)

Ah, okay.  Makes purr-fect sense. :-)

We've been very fortunate thus far, and haven't run into any problems while we were temporarily cut off from the outside world.  Well, except for the time there was a little communication snafu while we were moving some furniture away from the windows just before a hurricane made landfall, and a rather heavy bookcase landed on my toes and broke them. ;-)

I guess we've just been so preoccupied lately re: our cat with FIV/FHV and all of his other issues., we've pretty much forgotten about what kinds of more ordinary problems could come up, let alone what to do about them. ;-)

Where do you think?
I basically have a one size fits all medical supply storage a lot of the same stuff you use for people works with animals as well.

If your pet or you have a bleeding wound or broken limb rip off the sleeve of a shirt and wrap it tightly around the wound to stop any bleeding. We learned this in Scouts turns out it also works in a pinch for animals.

As for provisions keep a few cans of cat food and some bottles of water with your own.

Thanks oodles!

We do have a first-aid kit for the non-feline folks in the family.  But we're also willing to consider some 'outside the box' remedies for our cats that some people absolutely swear by in a pinch, and would never have occurred to us in a million years.  Oh, like maybe Manuka honey.  We were skeptical at first, but it has proved to be a godsend when traditional medicine hasn't worked out so well. ;-)
