I've figured out a way to cut the high cost of new glasses. When you get a new prescription, take an old pair of frames in and have only the lenses replaced. It's the frames that cost so much. I haven't needed a new prescription in some time, so I haven't tried this, but I know other people who have.

I tried to do this last year. The place I got my glasses tried to charge me $225 for LENS only. I told them they were insane.  I will see if walmart can do this. I just need lens for astigmatism and 3.0 power for both eyes and the different axis of each eye. otherwise I could get away with contacts if I didn't have astigmatism but that's the way it goes.

Good idea though!

I remember seeing a commercial about mail order glasses-I have to find that link now that I have my script. It was dirt cheap for the glasses and lens...got to find it asap! so I can post for the rest of our members!

When I took DD to WalMart for an eye exam and glasses, they referred me to Sam's Club because they had better appointment times. I went to SC and they have good prices and hours. You do NOT need to be a member to see their eye doctor.

The lenses only may be $225, but with new frames, it would be $400-$500. It's highway robbery, if you ask me.

I just ordered on 39dollarsglasses dot com. I can get plain ol glasses for $40. I like the anti glare coating and it was $69 for the glasses. no fuss. no muss. I ordered those photo changing ones for driving. Those were $180 but I got the antiblue glare and that other coating. I bought a 3rd pair with nothing extra for $45. I want to compare. All you have to do is measure in mm the distance between the pupils=you can print it out and look in a mirror. I figured if I don't like the sunglasses I can return them. So now I have no excuses to not wear sunglasses. and no sales person to deal with. no fuss.

Dreamerrose-these glasses I tried to get new lens cost me $190 new=with insurance. So I laughted at them when they tried to get $200 for just the lens then they wanted them for 2 weeks. I said no. I have no other glasses to wear. Hopefully these glasses I just ordered will work. I got 2nd shipping via ups. $7 shipping for 3 pairs. I will let you all know. anything is better than what I have which are all scratched. I got some redicously pink frames..these are my computer glasses for at home. I will see if walmart can do the lens for those glasses  I wanted to get updated. by the way that $225 for just the lens-WAS with insurance-the insurance allows new lens every year=I have NO Clue how they came up with $225 WITH insurance!!

I have a futon sofa.  I got it when my oldest was in Middle school and started hitting 6 feet.  1st kid would lay on the couch and there was no room for anyone else.  So I got a queen size futon.  One kid lays down, room for another.  Also came in handy for sleepovers and guests. When I got the mattress, I put a waterproof mattress cover over it and have gone through numerous covers when ever I wanted a change of color.   It's too long for my current house, I want a smaller couch but haven't found one I like and can afford.

I got my current glasses at a place in the Mall.  They had a buy one get another pair free.  Well, the free pair had to come from the clearance section and the lenses weren't free since I needed bi-focals, then I wanted the transition ones.  But the ones I paid the real money for were transition bi-focals with a very dark tint.  The sun here is brutal and my last glasses were the ones that darken in the sun but didn't darken in the car so driving when the sun was setting or rising was hard and not exactly safe.  It was about a thousand for the two pair (cringe)  DH has no idea I spent so much (I pay the bills) but I will have them for years.

@Donutte   I wonder if duct tape would work as a temporary solution?  You would have to get enough water out (below the crack in the pipe) and tape around it - assuming you can work in the small opening.  It will stick on under the water.  I know people who used it to repair holes in their kayaks.

I forgot to answer about the sofa=I never had any trouble with second hand sofas. also if you have DE foodgrade=stick it outside for a day and pour this powder all over it. any bugs in It will kill it. or get a furniture cover and wrap in plastic-this will kill anything in there because they need oxygen to breathe. I found my unusual sofa near a popular beach town-Plaistow NH, It has 1 long cushion instead of 3 cushions but it weighs over 200 lbs to move it. its hard wood frame. It is made by some small furniture company in NYC, I never heard of them. Kind of like Ethan Allen here. I have had it for 20 years. The bad part is its made of some fabric that you can not dry clean or wash-its an off white material and swirls of flowers=I keep it covered. This is my bed. I have slept on this couch for 20 years and no back aches. no issues. We put some blocks together under the foots to raise it up 9 inches so I can get out of it easier. This was for my hyst surgery and just left it like this.

you can check out estate sales and upper end sales=you can tell who takes care of their stuff and who doesn't. google bed bugs how to spot and they show you what to look for when buying second hand. pretty informative. The good news is DE kills them. and wont harm your cats. I would be more afraid of bedbugs from overseas shippin containers than buying from a house down the road where you live. The only hard part is having someone to help you move it. Just my
for buying second hand. I would never pay retail.

I really should look into futons - that's a good idea.  Your living room looks so warm and inviting, btw.
Is Capucchino in front of the fan cooling off?  Actually, that is a space heater with a parabolic mirror behind it that throws the heat straight across the room. It has saved a lot of money vs running the heat pump as it does not heat the whole room. My Panthera will practically climb into the thing (he can't) he is also the one who slept on the patio in 100 degree heat with the sun shining on him while all the others were inside on the tiles lol! I don't live in that apt anymore and the futon is no longer with me.

Now that's right in my price range!
(It's amazing what people throw out, isn't it?)

Possibly, I put a cap from a prescription bottle on it. Had to put it upside down, because the flapper was in the way otherwise. It didn't completely block it out but enough that I was able to get some water in there enough for a good flush. I tried filled it again and it was back down within an hour, so it didn't work out so well apparently. So might give duct tape a try. My nephew can't come out before next weekend unfortunately :(

I am sorry no one can help you. If you were closer to me I would bring Jon and we could figure something out. Is it easy to turn the valve on and off under the toilet tank? Mine leaks when its changed position and I probably should get Jon to install a new valve before it becomes winter but the stupid system has only one shut off underneath the trailer. Its dirty and cold under there. I absolutely hate crawling under my house. I keep forgetting to pull out some of the stuff I shuffled under there for storage. It is a cement pad but they only made it less than a foot thick.

Does anyone ever suffer from tennis elbow or otherwise known as 'lateral epicondylitis'? I am researching exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles. The PT they sent me home to do was ten years ago and I only remember one exercise. Just wanted to pick people's brains. The exercise is holding my forearm out and lifting my hand up-just the wrist with fingers relaxed-like I have my arm on an armchair and flip my hand up. this does help. just need to relearn the stuff.

I love duct tape.  It fixes so many things especially for those us us that are less mechanically inclined.

I walked my 3+ mile loop this morning.  It felt like I was walking slower today but when I got to my block I was still short 5 minutes. Took the long way around so I had my 60 minutes.  It's getting easier.

Gorilla Tape can hold underwater or wet conditions longer.

Thank you everyone for all your thoughts and input on my couch issue.  I'm going to go with either a futon or something from a higher end second hand furniture store  - you've all helped me rule out buying something new and cheaply made.  What I really wish is that I could find a couch like my ex and I found when we first got married.  The frame was beautifully carved maple (I believe) and the cushions were made out of down.  We paid less than $100 and it was the most comfortable couch in the world.  Alas it vanished from my life many years ago.

Re: glasses - The last time I got glasses, I had insurance that was supposed to cover pretty much everything.  I walked out with a $450 bill, wondering how in the world a pair of free glasses had just cleaned out my bank account.
It finally dawned on me that I'd been conned but by the time I figured it out, the place had gone out of business.

Congratulations @Handsome Kitty  for doing so well on your walks.  You're an inspiration!

I've just finished packing my suitcase and packing up Mingo's things. I'm off to Denver tomorrow to meet my son and his wife who live near Vail. They have two fur kids, so I will try to post a picture of them.

Mingo is zooming around the house, a little anxious about the change in routine, especially when he saw his food and toys go in a bag. He's going to the vet for boarding. The petsitter in my neighborhood wants to come only once a day, so I decided the vet is better. I hope he doesn't freak out. I will miss him tonight.

I'm looking forward to the cool mountain air and the beautiful alpine flowers. They are way up in the Rockies, over the Continental Divide. Jon has a cactus blooming in his yard right now.

I have a question which is a complete change of subject but I'm looking for input on something.  I don't have a couch at the moment and it's a problem because Chula wants to sit next to me and there isn't room in the chair I use.  She won't sit on my lap.  The result is that she keeps trying to get me to go sit on my bed where she can snuggle.  Paul will sit on my lap but could also use the space of a couch.  So....now  I'm looking at couches.  Money, of course, is an issue.  The question is:  do I go for a well made second hand couch or an inexpensive probably cheaply made new couch?  I've bought second hand couches before with no problem but have since heard of people getting bedbugs that way and....no.  Just. No.

If anyone has any feedback, I would deeply appreciate it!

Just chiming in, I do know that the Salvation Army Thrift Stores routinely inspect and treat ALL upholstered furniture for bedbugs and for fleas.  It's SOP for them.  Just in case.

@Anne It seems that the Microsoft Edge browser was the issue.  I'm on FireFox now and all is well.  I'll be going to Chrome later on, now that I know how to migrate my bookmarks from FireFox.  One step further along in getting C Rex out to pasture!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts on Artie. I really appreciate them.

You guys are the best! I did not give the extra dose of cisapride. I feel that he has enough medicine per day. I will just have to deal with his 'gifts' and pillowcase smears. I have a follow-up appointment at the end of October with this Vet.

I have a 'gift' on the other chair last night, and 2 on the floor this morning; also a pillowcase smear--- and nothing in the litter box! He went yesterday!

Yes, I feel the same way as you all do about the echo and any extra testing. I am going to take my own Vet's advice. She has been though all of this with both me and Artie.

Thanks for making me feel a bit better about my decisions.

Foxxycat, If I do have to have more of Artie's teeth removed, at some point; it will not help decrease his medicine intake. He is taking it for IBD and for chronic constipation. He has never had to have an enema, because I catch things very early.

I came home from grocery shopping today, Artie ran to greet me! He also had the zoomies all over the place!! I was so happy to see this. I chased him for a while. Then he licked a bit of food, and wanted his 'tent'...

As far as eyeglasses go..well, I pay a fortune!!!

I have a very strong prescription, have bifocals and astigmatism. I also have a petite face (head). I have to get the line of glasses which are specifically made for petite heads...the only part of me that is petite! I also have a very small bridge of my nose, so fit is always a problem.

My focal point is also between regular sizes.

I finally found an optician who is absolutely awesome! He picks out my frames for me. I just walk in the door, he shows me a few, and it is usually the first one he picks out.

I get the works on my eyeglasses: the gradient bifocals, the anti-glare coating, scratch resistant coating, the kind of lenses which change color due to the sun, and extra thin lenses.

My last pair cost me $800--- no insurance. I get new glasses every year.

I did get a pair of strait distance glasses, without anything, except for the extra thin less for $200 dollars. I use these for watching TV on the coach, but I can still see some glares.

thanks again...(hugs) to all.

Has anyone here ever planted a fish under their tomato plants? My mom swears by it and her tomato plant is taller than her. Mine, on the other hand, is only about 8 inches tall. I'm thinking about burying one next to mine tomorrow. Any advice or experience with this fish thing?

I just recieved news from my boyfriend yesterday that his 14 year old cat Maxi has late stage liver cancer and only has about 3 weeks left to live. Poor Maxi :( they are going to put her down in late july or early august. :(

My boyfriend is really broken up about it. He and his family have had her since 2003 (but she was over a year old when they got her from the shelter) :( .
