...with the cats...
good afternoon!

this week i'm recovering from the flu -- my first time ever having it. with this on my mind, for today's Question of the Day i'm wondering.........

Have you had a cold, virus, flu or etc during this (or your most recent) winter/cooler time of year?

i'll start!

this flu was the first illness i've had this winter, and actually the first i've had in 5 years or more. i tend to take preventative measures against colds/viruses/etc for the winter months by having chicken based soups and citrus juice on a regular basis. i don't know if that makes any difference, but i figure it can't hurt either. it certainly helped once i'd contracted the flu, having both of those on hand!

i'm also glad that i didn't need antibiotics to treat this flu. i would have seen a doctor if i hadn't started feeling better, but i did start feeling better on day #4. my dad believed that antibiotics are generally over-prescribed by doctors, which can then lead to problems with people developing a resistance to them -- or possibly the virus developing a resistance to them. that makes sense to me, but i'm not sure. i do think that if my body can fight off a cold/flu/virus on it's own in a reasonable amount of time, i'll have a stronger immune system by letting it do so. but, that's just my opinion.

okay, now it's your turn!

Nope. Not yet. I get the flu shot every year. We get it for free at work if we are on the insurance they offer. I did have a nasty stomach bug back in November for about 4 days. I very rarely get sick. Everyone at work has been sneezing and hacking all over the place. So far, I've escaped it

I hope you feel better soon. I agree with your dad about antibiotics being over-prescribed.

I used to have tonsillitis once a month until I had my tonsils out a year and a half ago. Since then Ive had bronchitis twice. I can't catch a break!

As for the flu, I only get the flu shot if in pregnant. And both times I got the flu! I don't get the flu though when I don't get the shot so go figure...

I do generally have one bad winter cold and one bad summer one. Have every year since I was a kid.

No. I take a flu shot every year, and a pneumonia vaccine when a new one comes out. I had pneumonia following a bad cold about 10 years ago. I nearly died the first week and was sick for 5 months.

Not yet (knock on wood). I always get a flu shot and had a pneumonia shot as well not too long ago.  There is a lot of something going around the office, so I'm trying to not be in the way of any of the germs.

This was the first year I got a flu shot. I felt I'm getting older, and better safe.

However, I wound up getting a severe respiratory infection - was almost worse than the flu since it took a good 3 weeks before I felt like myself again.  It was on the verge of becoming bronchitis - something I'm very prone to.

I know one has nothing to do with the other, just was bad luck so I'm sure next year I'll get another flu shot and probably, get sick anyway :p

Unfortunately I've been sick a lot in the last year, though not consistently with the same thing. I had the worst flu of my life in November-December, and I have another cold right now but am mostly better as of today. I'm pretty unamused with seeming to get sick about once a month for the last year.

I got a flu shot this year a the Pneumonia shot a few years ago.  Recommended by my doctor because I have asthma.  I don't really get the flu.  I usually get a bad sinus infection early fall/late summer.  Mostly I can ride them out but the last one I got a Z-pack.

Had a cold not too long ago! My 3 year steak of not getting sick ended
oh life. At least it wasn't terrible, but still fairly uncomfortable.

I didn't get a flu shot this year (got it the year prior) just flew over my head! But will definitely do it again later 2016.

Thank goodness, no.  I get a flu shot every year.  I got in the habit of it when I worked at a state mental hospital, and we took shots for everything they made shots for, plaus got checked for TB every year.

I've reached the age now where colds are few and far between,  I've had most of the cold viruses in the USA by now.  You do know that there isn't one cold?  As soon as you've had one strain, you're immune to it and can't get it any more.  That's why very young children get colds every time you turn around, but elderly people rarely do.

It seems like what ever is going around the school my son gets and brings home. We all are sick at least once a month since August. I am so ready for Summer break.

, I have not been deathly sick this season. I did have a period of time where I felt as if I was fighting a cold: very tired, no energy, sleeping a lot, a bit of a cough, a bit of a scratchy throat; however, it did subside. It took a long time though; a few weeks.......I know a long time, but I now have the luxury of not having to work--poor  but no stress...and it seemed to physically help a lot. I was able to sleep and do what I wanted, when I wanted to. That seemed to be paramount in recuperation.

I do dread this time of year. A lot of flue, pneumonia, and bronchitis going around. I did have the pneumonia vaccine this year, along with the flu shot. I am still very wary of going out in public...but I cannot be a hermit!

I have a history of getting a bad case of asthmatic bronchitis and/or a bad sinus infection, yearly~~~ which results in bronchitis....so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I had a cold a little while ago but that's it. My husband, daughter and son have all been sick but I didn't get it at all. I called it "mom immunity". It seems like I don't get sick often since I became a mom 3 years ago.

Ughhh... My youngest child started kindergarten this year. I volunteer at least twice a week in his class room. I have been sick off and on since school started :( (Think this happened when my oldest started school too; she's almost 19).

I just got over the flu after nursing my little one through it... We spent spring break being sick :(

Cold season isn't over yet so there's still a chance of gettng sick. I had a massive cold last April that kept me out of work for a week.

No flu shot this year, as I was not in the office the day they had them at work, was busy taking care of Lucky (and couldn't be bothered to get it on my own). And *knock on wood* have not gotten anything really this winter. I thought last week I might be getting the flu, and a few other times thought I had a cold coming on. But it was like the gloom and doom weather reports - expecting the worst and then it was all sunny skies.

I haven't had the flu in years. Even when my parents (I live with them) had it I didn't get it. I have a super strong immune system and I have never had a flu shot nor do I plan to!

I do however get colds sometimes. You know fever, sore throats, congested etc. but they don't seem to last very long. I have sinus issues so get chronic sinus infections through out the year.

The time I did feel like I had the flu was after a tooth extraction in 2014. I couldn't get warm for 3 days, it was pretty scary and it was in the summer!

I haven't gotten a cold this season yet. . .haha, now that I've said that, I'll probably get one :tongue2:. I don't know if I've ever actually had influenza, but I have had some nasty colds, and it usually turns into bronchitis, so that stinks.

Not only are antibiotics overprescribed, they don't do anything against viruses anyway! Antibiotics only kill bacterial infections.

I have been lucky so far just one mild cold.  I don't get the flu shot though now that I am sixty  I should start getting them.  I usually go several years between having the flu.  The  last time I had it was 4 years ago.  That was a year that it hit particularly hard and it took me longer to get over it than usual.  I think some of that is my age as well as it being a particularly bad year so next fall I am going to start getting flu shots.
