Gorgeous! Your dog has her little guard watching over her!

@sarthur2 For the most part, I just tolerate the weather here
I'd love to live somewhere warmer, but without actually having to move. I love the landscape round here, I just want it in a different climate!
some people in California say they wish San Francisco was in Southern California as they love the city but hate the weather

I love living in Washington since the weather is fairly mild all of the time. This year has been weird though since we've had a month of 80 degree days.

oh my, having grown up in Europe I know the centigrades but most Americans do not, they still count in Fahrenheits.
small lesson : 0 C = 32 F, 100 C = 212 F, 25 C = 80 F, go figure from there
It's funny - my parents still think in Fahrenheit for the most part (and pounds and ounces for cooking etc), but I think in Centigrade for temperature, yet am equally comfortable with metric or imperial for cooking. With jewellery making, I think in imperial for strand/necklace/bracelet lengths but metric for bead sizes etc :confuse3: My head is a very confusing place :lol3:

Showjumps/cross country fences are always in feet and inches to me too...

@mickNsnicks2mom   I didn't post about it aside from this thread as I've been  stressing out over it. We took him in for his general wellness exam, and he needed a tooth cleaning. We opted to have xrays done, and they revealed bone loss in his jaws so rather than a simple cleaning he ended up having 8 teeth and a section of both his upper and lower jaw removed.

The vet has no idea why, but she hopes that this will stem further loss, especially now that we know to watch out for it.
awwww........poor sinbad! you were wise to have the xrays done! sinbad (and tempest) have such good kitty parents, you take very good care of them both.

my jaspurr is going to our vet's to have his teeth/gums checked, on july 18th. i knew he was having bad breath before snick and i adopted him -- at the end of may, but when i'd mentioned the bad breath to the shelter while i was still fostering him they told me flat out that they couldn't afford dental work. jaspurr is just turned 3 years old, and i read that around 3 years old is a common point in cats lives for dental cleanings to be needed or other dental issues to start developing. so i'll have his teeth and gums looked at and will probably have xrays done too. i want to know now if a dental cleaning is needed or dental work. if so, i'll save the money for that and, unless something that cannot wait is found, i'll have it done in february -- dental awareness month at vet's, and discounts are given -- thank you for mentioning that, @Angels mommy.

in the meantime, i've started the process of getting jaspurr used to teeth brushing. we've just done some tasting of kitty toothpaste for a couple days now. i read that just having the toothpaste in his mouth, the enzymes in it can help clean his teeth a bit.

I started getting Asha used to the whole tooth brushing thing. She was doing ok, but I kept forgetting to do it. Bad mommy :anon: I've admitted defeat, and use that food additive now instead...can't remember what it's called though.

Phew!   Well I didn't die from 'off milk' poisoning and got to work today, but having to catch up here on over 70 posts has been quite a time consuming excersize!
Thanks for the tips on alternatives to dairy milk those of you who chipped in there, I had thankfully used soya light milk on my oatmeal breakfast otherwise I would have been a good deal less happy this morning when I posted.    I try to use dairy milk only for tea / coffee if I can but the alternatives tend to be a lot more expensive than  dairy here in the UK.

Lots of thoughts for young Sinbad today, and all the other fur friends who have recently had oral surgery.   I always try to stay hopeful that the worst of Mouse's dental problems are behind us but don't like to relax.  The toothpaste remains a regular routine in this kitty home - I hope Jasper takes to it as well as Mouse @mickNsnicks2mom.

Loving all the chat about food but not sure I can cope with the hot weather - I can't cope with anything above around 70F.

@Anne   I love that you went to visit that worst museum in the world with the fantastic view.
I bet your kids really enjoyed that trip....   I wonder how much competition there is out there for being worse than your one?

Luna is feeling much better now that the anesthesia has worn off a lot more. She is drinking and can walk around a lot more normally. The kitten has decided that she is no longer interested and has returned to our room to sleep on the window perch.

We brush both cats' teeth most nights. The kitten is still learning, but doesn't protest too much to brushing. Its our way to at least attempt to minimize the dental work in their future. We started brushing Carrot's teeth after a vet said he would need dental cleanings yearly without it.

Apparently brushing the dog's teeth might have been a good idea also.
I feel bad for her. Poor girl having her gums rotting in her mouth.

I'm tired, but am putting off going to bed for some reason. Think its because I'm spending way too much time sleeping at the moment. Pixie (greyhound) keeps looking longingly at me, as if to say 'Come on Mom, you know you want to get into bed and snuggle with me.'

Resisting for now...

@mickNsnicks2mom  @Columbine Raw bones help clean teeth too. We give Sinbad and Tempest duck feet (the pet store sells them, but I've also seen them in the grocery store), and the bone crunching cleans teeth pretty nicely. Chicken wings and necks are good too. The vet was amazed the first time we brought them in, at the excellent state of their teeth, when I said I supplemented their cat food with raw bones, chicken hearts and little bits of liver she was pretty excited and said the raw bones are what was keeping their teeth so strong and clean.

Tempest is especially fond of the duck foot, she plays hunting games with it then crunches contentedly. My husband loves playing with her by hiding it so she hunts it down and 'kills' it before enjoying it. Sinbad likes his being tied to a string and dragged around for hunting and pouncing.

I am happy now, the drugs appear to have finally left Sinbad's system. He is sitting next to me grooming and purring normally. Yay!

I've lived in MD for 50yrs. I love the variety of precips and weather. We get warm, cool, rain, snow. Always something to look forward to as far as clothing choices, walking the dog, indoor activities, etc...love it..the traffic on the other hand is the worst ever.

So great that Sinbad is acting himself again

Yes, I'm very aware of the health benefits of raw bones. However, I've only just convinced the more paranoid members of my family that feeding a little frozen raw isn't going to kill them (now I just have to get Asha to eat frozen instead of FD...harder than I thought...). I somehow get the feeling that I'd be chucked out if I started with raw bones :lol3:

I've never heard of cats chewing on bones. That sounds like an interesting thing to try out for sure, especially if you don't have time or a patient enough cat for tooth brushing.

Just make sure it's raw bones, which is chewy, and not cooked bones, which are brittle and can splinter and get lodged in the throat and pierce the stomach lining.

It's 93 degrees Fahrenheit here in NM it's usually hot this time of year, but lately we've been having mild temperatures and rain.

Just like with dogs then? I know dogs are only supposed to have certain kinds of bones since certain cooked ones (chicken bones) splinter. I probably won't try giving bones though since I am fine with brushing their teeth.

I hadn't heard anything about all sorts of cat things before I joined here, but mostly food stuff.  I've always been in to human food and nutrition so realizing how ignorant I have been about it for my cats was quite a shock.  Mouse is such a funny critter about food that I haven't tried him with any bones or feet or anything so far but I do find it fascinating, everything I read over in the nutrition areas, and what spills over to health for dental problems.

What ever I feed Mouse has to be fine for tossing about on the floor because he doesn't like food in a bowl much, and definitely prefers it being thrown so he has the hunt and chase first.  I put it down to him not having a great sense of smell and his eye sight not being brilliant either.  It can take several attempts for him to figure out where a bistcuit has gone even when it's right under his nose.

He's just jumped up for one of his snuggles so best stop typing.

It's not the scintillating pull of this Babble thread keeping you up, is it? It's jam-packed with all sorts of awesome trivia that could make going to bed difficult! ;)

One of my cats gets a pill three times a day. Fortunately for me, he's very easy to pill. Open his mouth, pop the pill down his throat, rub his neck to be sure he swallows. 3 seconds and done.

Too bad he's not as cooperative with my sister when I go out of town for a few days and leave him with her. He spits the pill out into her hand, or catches it under his tongue and spits it out later for her to step on, or bites it in two. Not sure how he managed that last one. He doesn't have any teeth.

i've tried the drops you place in the cats cheeks as well as liquid that gets added to their water. jaspurr didn't particularly enjoy either of those. with the toothpaste, i've just been wiping it on his front paw once a day so far. he licks it right off, as easy as that. we'll see about moving towards some light brushing coming up.

@Angels mommy has a great way she brushes her angel's teeth. maybe she'll stop by and share that.

My older cat was very calm when we got him so he was never a problem when it came to starting tooth brushing. Training the kitten has been interesting, but she is very adaptable.
