My cat gave birth 3 days ago but I wasn't there to watch the afterbirths come out. How can I be sure they did? She and the babies are doing well. I planned to have her fixed when the kittens are 8 weeks but I wanted to know what to look for, for example are there any symptoms or signs the afterbirths may have not come out?

Hi and welcome to the site!

The main thing you should be looking out for is either green discharge, or mom seeming generally unwell (feverish, overly lethargic, crying, not paying attention to the kittens). If any of this occurs, you should get to a vet ASAP.

If you are concerned for some reason though, the best thing to set your mind at ease is really probably a visit to the vet.

Good luck and let us know if you have any more questions! I also hope you will consider getting your cat fixed as soon as the vet gives the okay. An article about some of the many benefits of spaying can be found here if you are interested: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/spay-and-neuter-your-cats

Thank you! She seems well, very attentive to the kittens. Crazy hungry of course. I'm not noticing any discharge but she keeps herself so clean. I'm just going to keep a close eye on things for now.

And yes! She is getting fixed for sure. She was a stray we took in that already had kittens, this happened because of our own laziness. I'll be making an appointment! Lol thanks again.

She is very pretty! I love orange cats. They are usually very sweet. Good that you will get her fixed. :)

You had already got good answer from Tulosai.

I want to add, its rare they afterbirth doesnt come out.   If it was a normal delivery, as far as you could detect without complications, the afterbirth surely come out.  but the moms do eat it, immediately, unless there are very many of them, so  the owner seldom sees them unless you sit there and wating, not blinking even once.

Now, you werent there so you cant be sure.  The betting is heavy on the side everything is OK,

but I understand you.   The wise owner / caretaker shall be vigilant.  Complications do occur now and then, after all.  It may be afterbirth, it may be mastitis, it may be some bacteria infection...

Its wise and prudent to be watchful.

But dont overdo it.  You must be able to enjoy it too!

Good luck!
