Of course we're taking him to the vet right away! Right now! He started with his bladder issues again yesterday (he has crystals) and we woke up this morning to find him hardly moving and hardly breathing! He's generally healthy and he's not too overweight! I checked his throat and I don't see anything he's choking on! What can this be? I'm freaking out! He's my baby! The vet hasn't said anything besides that they need to see him immediately!

Thanks, everyone. The vet says he is completely blocked, and his bladder is so full they can't even risk getting a urine sample :( they're keeping him overnight and perhaps Saturday, and giving him a catheter (sp?). I feel so bad for him; he's never been away without us except when he was neutered as a kitten :sigh:

They got the catheter in place, and also had to clean out his bladder, as it was very "angry," they said. Poor kitty :( he may have to stay tomorrow, too. It just depends on how he recovers and how he's feeling. I'm really hoping he feels better, and not too scared or in pain!

I'm sure they will have the pain under control while they heal your kitty. It really is a scary time when all of this happens and you feel totally helpess. As soon as they empty the bladder cats tend to feel a whole lot better, much like when we do after we've been busting and we empty ours. They will give him meds to calm the inflamed bladder and keep him comfortable.

Hope this helps and I'm thinking of your kitty!

Whisperer, I know your'e pain and my Kitty knows your Kitty's pain.  Mine had a second obstruction weeks ago and had to be hospitalized.  It took all of my Money but it saved his life.  We found out the crystals were most "likely" caused by the cheap, dry cat food.  I guess the "ash" in the food causes the crystals?

I now have him strictly on a wet, canned diet......The Vet recommended C/D for Urinary Issues.  It is expensive so when I am low on money I purchase the Whisker's Special Diet "Turkey and Liver" for Urinary Issues.

I hope he does well...will be praying for him.  Will check back later to see how he is......It is a very painful thing to go through for both you and him.

Blessings,

Rachel

Same thing here, my boy blocked when he was around 1 or 2. Got him to the emergency vet in time, and he went thru the catheter and they pumped massive fluids into him before he came home late the next day to help 'flush" him out. He was fine, but we had to watch his diet. He wouldn't eat the U/D, but kept him on Friskies special diet.

Healing thoughts for you both, it is scary. I'm not sure how old your boy is, but i recall a vet telling me that he rarely sees cases of male blockage after they are 2 or 3, you may want to ask your vet if there is any truth to that... (I'm not a vet, nor do I play one on TV). Later in my boy's life I just fed him canned whatever he would eat, he never blocked again and lived a healthy life until 18.

If it hasn't been mentioned, a Drinkwell water fountain is a great way to encourage water drinking to dilute his urin for the future.

I'll bet he's feeling better already and will be happy to be home again soon! Healing vibes for you both :vibes:

Thank you!

He has been on a strict ISO, vet-recommended brand for about a year now, ever since his bladder crystal issues first started. And he's had medicine off-and-on for the past year, also; however, they're now doing a blood test to see exactly what type of bacteria could be causing the irritation so that they can give him better, more suited meds.

He does have a drink well, but we put it away awhile ago as he wouldn't drink from it :( I'll try it again, though, if I remember. And I'll soak his food in a little bit of water, as online searches say to do :)

Also, Charlie is four. He first started having bladder crystals when he was three, but since he was a badly-bred-stray Maine Coon kitten, it doesn't surprise me that he has bladder problems :(

Here's a picture of Boy :heart4:

Can you elaborate on what this means please?   I get an uneasy feeling when I read this.

He is beautiful, what bright eyes and I love his white "eyeliner"!
Heard from the vet's office yet? How'd your boy make out last night?

I think there are other ingredients in cat food to help with struvite stones... I want to say vitamin C and cranberries... i can't recall. I was searching for info on the ever aggravating oxalate stone treatments years ago. I think some of those ingredients can be found in higher end trests. I was flummoxed because I had one cat with oxalate issues and the other with struvite - and they would mix-and-match with the food bowls and the treatments were totally different.

Luckily, the struvite emergency only reared its ugly head once, and I only noticed he had a problem by pure luck. I had the flu and was crabby and yelled at him, then felt bad and went to make nice and apologize, that's the only reason I noticed something was wrong and I was able to catch it in time. Dumb luck.

Hope everyone is on the mend and feeling better! Again, he's a beauty :)

I mean I'll dampen his kibble up a little bit, to hydrate him more :)

Thank you all! We didn't quite get what we wanted to hear when we called the vet last night. They're going to keep him until Monday now, because his bladder is still irritated and bloody :(
