my kitten is about 4 months old and she got some fleas. i gave her a bath with some Hartz ultra guard flea and tick shampoo. it said it was for kittens 12 months and younger but im worried if she may be having some kind of reaction. she has been throwing up ever since i gave her the bath. but i also chanced her food but she has had the food before and it never made her sick. so what could i do? i gave her another bath with regular mild soap to see if that helps her. iv never seen my sisters cat have any type of reacting like this. anyone have a clue to why she is throwing up so much?

also her behavior seems fine. she still plays and tries to eat but when she does it just comes right back up... even when she takes a drink of water.

i had a couple cats have the same reaction after using Hartz flea shampoo on them. after that i did some research and  found they use toxic ingredients that may cause that reaction in sensitive cats. i use soap and water to give mine baths now and a vinegar rinse ONLY no flea shampoos. never had another reaction since. but boy was it scary. if she gets lethargic or the vomiting gets worse be sure you take her to a vet. and a couple baths to remove as much of the shampoo could hurt either .hope she gets better soon

Hartz flea products are notorious for killing cats and kittens. Get your kitten to the vet right away today.

Don't put vinegar on your kitten. Don't put anything else on her now, her system is already over loaded from the toxic Hartz. Please, take her to the vet and tell your vet you washed her with a toxic Hartz shampoo.

She is old enough to be treated with a SAFE (advantage, frontline plus or revolution) flea treatment, but don't use anything else until your kitten has seen the vet. You will probably have to wait before using any of these.

She will need de-worming, and vaccines and spaying anyway, once she has recovered, so now is the time to get her started at the vet.

Because of the Hartz, she needs medical attention. Your sister's cat has been lucky, but the luck may run out sooner or later. Google Hartz kills. Thousands of pets die every year, on these products, Hartz, Bio Spot, Seargents, Pet Armour..they are not safe.

PS You can help keep her comfortable by combing the fleas off. Get a jar of soapy water and one of clean water and some paper towels. Run the flea comb through the fur collecting fleas. Dip the comb in the soapy water, the soapy water will drown the fleas. Dip the comb in the clean water to rinse, wipe the comb with a paper towel, then comb again. Do this as much as kitten can tolerate but be careful, you don't want to over comb and make her skin feel raw.

But the most important thing is to get her to the vet. If she is over 2 pounds the vet may give her a capstar tablet which will kill all adult fleas for 24 hours.

You will need to clean the environment too. Wash everything that is washable. Vacuum daily, carpet, floors and upholstery. Empty the bag or canister to an outdoor trash can after vacuuming. You can cut up a flea collar to use in the vacuum. Do NOT put a flea collar on the kitten, these are just as toxic as the other products mentioned.

i will repeat, frontline isn't working well anymore. my cat has never been outside and a year ago, she got loaded with fleas, no other animals ect have been in my house either. advantage is making some sick too. revolution is good but too much toxic for a tiny baby. yes, flea comb several times a day with the water to dip the comb in. capstar is good and can be used once a day for a week but if it is a tiny baby, i wouldn't use it till the kitten is over two pounds. combing constantly is best. clean all the bedding and vaccum a couple times a day well. yes as one said, the vinegar will upset the PH balance of cat's delicate skin! oh, i hope your cat doesn't die from that crap! hartz, sargents and bio spot have killed many a small cat and dog. the shampoo has too. the spirulina is kelp *seaweed* and it detoxifies the liver. it saved many a cat when the vets couldn't. i am not allowed to post links because of dumb rules or i could send you links on how many cat lives have been saved this way with spirulina when they ate poisonous plants ect. i work with animals professionally.

revolution is good to use once a year but if your cat never goes outside and doesn't eat mice and birds ect, likely not to get worms. but ALL kittens and puppies need to be dewormed when they are small because many are born with them from the mom's if they are feral or if they go outdoors. yeh, flea collars can make them sick or worse too. some even strangle on them.

VET NOW IF NOT GONE THERE YET~ they are so easy to be hurt when they are so tiny.

well good news people. reeses is getting better. she has been able to keep her food down very well. she isnt throwing up anymore. she is very playful. almost back to her usual self. the only thing she is doing now is scratching alot and licking herself alot. no more fleas that i have seen though. anyone have any idea to why she may b itching alot? i also noticed she has little scabs on her ears. is that just from her scratching? cuz thats where she is itching the most.

Reeses is scratching because of flea bites. One bath with a toxic flea shampoo is not going to eradicate the flea problem.

You really need to take your kitten to the vet, where she can be weighed, examined and safely treated for fleas. You will have to treat her monthly for at least six months to be sure the problem is completely gone. Flea eggs live in the environment for months. Once they hatch they will jump on kitty to feed and lay eggs. If she is treated with a safe for cats product such as frontline plus or revolution or advantage, they will eventually all die off.

The scabs are from flea bites and scratching. They can become infected. Please, take your kitten to the vet.

That sounds like a good idea to call the vet on Monday.  Many vets will have payments options for their billing

She is definitely having some type of reaction.  I don't know if it's related to the Hartz product but it sounds very coincidental.  I would contact the vet as soon as possible.  Personally I never give my cats flea medications for this very reason.  I do treat my dogs but do it when the cats will not have any contact with them for at least overnight.  Hope this turns out well

So happy for this update.  I read your first post and replied immediately instead of reading the entire thread.  I usually respond immediately when I see a post like this.  What did the vet say about the Hartz product or flea medications in general?  Yay, nay, maybe?

Stay away from all of the over the counter flea products. If the product is cheap, believe me there are no quality ingredients in it. Natural products with Geraniol, Peppermint oil, Lemon Balm, Tee Tree oil work well. Many manufacturers are out there that make products all natural. Research, research, research.........
