Mine covers both categories in one shot - a rock. Not just any rock, but one my cousin would have destroyed sickle blades on the combine header if he had not spotted it. It is an odd colour, and an erratic, certainly not the usual granite, limestone, etc. that is found in this area. It had bright green stripes showing through concretions. We both wanted to know what it was, so I gave it to someone in the Rock and Gem Society and he had no idea either but showed me a cut. There and then I had him cut the thing into bookends and coasters and polished, with the 'rock people' retaining a slice for identification, Cousin asked several times about the rock and I blatently lied to him and said the rock people still had it and were working on ID for the thing. That Christmas, I took the rock, all cut and polished, and beautiful, padded it well so it wouldnt get scratches, put it in a box that just held it, wrapped it and gave it to him. He was shocked and very pleased to get his rock back in that state, had no idea it would look so good and even match his decor. He complained earlier that day about the weight of the stuff I toted along, and even asked if I had rocks in the bag (polished stones as added weight or noise are a specialty of mine) and again I lied. I haven't been able to top that yet.....*SIGH*
For the record, the Rock and Gem Society people still have no idea what the rock is although it is specutated it is jadite, serpentine or other things that are dark green. The only thing certain is it does have iron in it and some small quartz crystals. They are sure it is an erratic and not granite. Have had it looked at by a geologist as well; his conclusion was it is an erratic. My only regret is not getting a pic of the rock before and after.......
