Sassy Josephine just went to the vet for ear infection. She had a fit of screaming and hissing two days ago, without any apparent reason, then calmed down and started hiding. I had thought she had gotten scared by something outside, or had been bothered by Grisou who likes to taunt her. But last night I noticed discharge coming from one ear, so to the vet we went.

The vet said it was probably some foxtail lodged in there. Lots of pus, and a ruptured ear drum. She didn't find any foxtails. So she said it could be cancer.

Since the Rogue died I tend to think the worst. I can't afford chemotherapy and don't want to put her through it.

Has anyone ever had a cat with ear infection and a ruptured eardrum? Do you know the cause? Does anyone have any advice? Or any vibes, please?

Sometimes the infection is behind the eardrum caused by allergies or a virus, and then the eardrum ruptures because the infection becomes too great and it has to escape somewhere.  This happens OFTEN in young children, I was amazed to learn how many children with allergies and earaches have holes in their eardrums. These holes more often then not heal on their own, so your cat is over the worst and with the help of antibiotics should be fine. Did the vet prescribe any kind of antibiotic, oral or ear drops? There are tests and observations that can be done to see if it is viral or bacterial. There are several natural ear drops on Amazon or pet med sites that could soothe and help if it is viral, ask your vet first if they would be OK. I feel for your little one, the pain must have been horrible, but hopefully the worst is over and the path to healing can begin.

I'll say a prayer for Sassy Josephine, it most likely is just an infection, NOT CANCER, keep positive although I know how hard that is. Sending vibes her way......

thank you, everyone. Sassy Josephine now gets Clavamox twice a day which apparently tastes horrible, though it smells of banana. She also had the Convenia shot and an anti-inflammatory shot. Already feeling better today, not hiding anymore but demanding food.

The vet advised against ear drops because of the ruptured ear drum.

I guess we just have to hang in there.

Sending prayers and vibes that Sassy Josephine continues to heal! I had a cat last year that went through the same thing and we didn't discover the cause. She made a complete recovery. She was put on Biomoxx and I had to keep it chilled and hide it inside boiled chicken because she would run off if she saw me bring out the eyedropper.

Thank you for all the support! She continues to shake her ear, and she still has some pus leaking out although it got a lot less now. @catsknowme, did you do anything else beside give Biomoxx? I got a bit better at administering the antibiotic since there are treats afterwards - amazingly Sassy can both swallow and complain bitterly at the same time

Now she felt the need to poop next to her litter box.

The antibiotics make things a bit more loose, so maybe she didn't make it in time... or it is a way of saying she doesn't like being forced to swallow something twice a day, on top of the ear hurting.

(The last time I got poop next to the litter box was after I went on vacation, to tell me that while I was welcome back, I should certainly be punished for leaving at all.)
