If you dont know they are probably domestic long hairs. DLH. 
So the question is, what look alikes they perhaps are.
If they are visibly biggish, visibly bigger than all other cats around, my proposal would be Norwegian forest cat look alike.
If they are of a more modest size, I will agree with you and say they are somewhat turkish van look alikes.
