Hi I'm trying to figure out what breed my cat is. He's a rescue cat I got from the spca when he was 12 weeks old. He's a year and a half now and nearly a stone in weight.

This is a picture from when he was a kitten.

If anyone knows what breed he is, or a mix of what he is, I'd be really interested to know. He was a stray so i assume he's a mix.

Also if you could tell me what weight he should be because he looks overweight now.

Thank you for your help.

Your kitty looks like a very beautiful tabby and white domestic shorthair (DSH).

As for his weight, if you suspect that he's overweight then he probably is. But it's not just about poundage, it's about body condition. There's info at this link that should help you figure out where he scores in that department: http://www.cathelp-online.com/health/bscore.php

What does he eat?

Yes, he is what you call for a "mix".

Or rather domestic shorthair, or moggie, or roof cat in Poland, or peasant cat in Sweden.

Very nice, very beautiful, but to put it bluntly - so it is.

Im not specialist on the different patterns nor colours, so I shall only say:  he is a tabby of some sort.  A very common type.

You dont have any contemporary pic, so it is impossible to say anything.

But very typical for these "peasant cats" is, if they are in good condition they shall look somewhat rather fat. It IS their normal, ideal stature.

Some breeds shall be more slender. For example russian blue or Orientals. but some, for them it is natural to be decently well fed.

Can you feel ribs and the backbone easily? or only just? or even - no fat at all at?

thanks for the info. I couldn't get him to ly on his side for a proper picture but here he is right now. I can feel his ribs but I can also pull some fat in my hands. its more his bottom half where he's bigger.

This is my other cat, Oscar, who is 10 months if you know what breed he is? I found him under a pallet of a diy store when he was two weeks old and nursed him back to health. You wouldn't think it looking at him now ha

Thanks again for replying, I was getting quiet worried about freddie's weight as he doesn't go out as much these days so i'm afraid he'll keep getting bigger.

Yeah, the tabby seems to be rather thick in some places - the tummy.

No gross overweight by any means, but a little too much, it seems for me.

Some of it is the quite common sack many does have, but the sack seems to be well filled.

What are you feeding him?

does he likes wet food? If yes, use it.

The black ans white is another example of nice shorthair domestic, I think.

Lovely cats.

Two nice examples of how you can sometimes get rewarded for your good deeds already in this life here on Earth.   :)

Good luck!

Very beautiful Domestic Shorthairs :) and I do think the first one is a little on the tubby side from the pic. My boy is tubby to and he is on a diet and going to an all wet food diet instead of kibble. All wet food is better for him to get him the moisture he needs and I read all wet diets will help a cat to lose weight, so long as you are feeding the correct amount. It just seems way to easy for a cat to get fat, but tough to get them to lose weight.

Hobo has been on a diet for over a year! I adopted him out of the shelter as a fatty then. They filled his bowl daily and he got no exercise. GRR that makes me mad. I only have fed him 1/4 cup 2x a day of a grain free diet for this whole year and 4 months I have had him, but I honeslty do not think he has lost anyhting but 1.5 lbs.

So to the all wet diet we go.

thanks :)

They have dried food down all the time and get a quarter of a tin of wet food each every day at half three.

My dad is in love freddie though so he often sneaks him table scraps, Oscar is usually out when we have dinner.

I'm trying to get him to play more with those toys on strings but he tends to just turn from side to side following it instead of running. He sometimes runs.
