It has taken 24 hours to write this…we needed a little time...

Whoever you are we want you to know that 23 of your 24 cats you dumped in the Galena area are safe, warm, dry and fed as of the evening of January 12th.

They are safe with special thanks to...
...the Mo Dept of Conservation who found one crate stuffed full of cats and kittens and a cardboard box and towels with loose kittens everywhere and took the time to call rescue after rescue to get them help.
---the WOW volunteers who met at HQ to triage them and figure out what litter belonged to whom and get them set up in separate carriers for transport.
---the WOW volunteer who took 4 carriers of 14 kittens and 2 moms to Rescue One for them and Eden Animal Haven to find fosters for.
---the 4 WOW volunteers who stayed at WOW until almost 9:30PM to weigh, bathe, trim nails, blow dry, deworm, feed and get the 7 we kept all set up in safe kennels with soft warm beds so they could decompress from the day they had out in the winter storm they were dumped in.

Thanks to the entire team above who said YES and stepped up to change their day to help YOUR cats YOU dumped. They were covered in urine, some feces and also smelled of a wood stove or fireplace. They were all socialized and sweet but scared. We can tell they were loved.

Did we all have other plans? Other cats ahead of these 23 on intake? You bet we did.

Creating a crisis means others on wait lists get bumped further out.
It may push others to crisis.
It may result in other cats having not so happy endings.

We want you to know we know it’s frustrating.

We know the support for cats is WAY less than the support for dogs.
There are fewer people willing to foster.
Cats receive fewer donations.
Cats get overlooked every day as people drive by and assume they are just free roaming and want to be outside in the weather.
Cats live almost twice as long as dogs if well cared for inside so people don’t look to adopt cats as often as dogs.

We know that most of the groups who assist cats all volunteer and don’t have paid staff or places where you can walk in and have a conversation in person vs over the phone. But, there ARE a lot of resources out there.

We aren’t sure if you...
...Called Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society or Tri Lakes Humane Society, both in your area and were on their wait list or not but those resources do exist likely closer to your home based on the dump location.

...Knew about SAAF – the low cost spay and neuter clinic located at 1600 North Washington in Springfield or the Cooper Clinic, located inside the Southwest Missouri Humane Society, that also offers low cost vetting.

...Have heard of SNAP who offers vouchers for those on fixed and low incomes to assist in spaying and neutering.

...Had reached out to vets in your area for ideas and resources when the first cats showed up at your property?

...Know that TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, Return and in a dire case of finances one can fix the cats as TNR and complete other routine vetting as funds are available, but the cats are FIXED so the reproduction stops.

We are hoping YOU will see this and go look for the cat YOU dumped during that winter storm.

We want you to know…
...The conservation agent tried to look for the cat that got away again today as she was able to while doing her job and did not find it.
...If you can find the cat WOW will take it and get it the same help as the others – no strings attached.
...If you have others that need surrendered, PLEASE reach out for help ASAP.
...We know they were loved because they are friendly and sweet so we know you had to be desperate to dump them in the winter storm. We hope YOU are ok and somewhere safe and warm tonight. We all promise to take good care of the kitties

Signed,
A group of the biggest cat lovers on the planet- WOW volunteers

PS -
WOW always needs volunteers at WOW HQ. If you have an hour or so in the AM or PM to scoop, feed and cuddle please email [email protected] to ask for an application or stop by WOW HQ tomorrow 10 AM to 2PM.

PPS- Some of you have asked for how to donate. We have a DONATE button in our website taking you directly to our fund we pay all vet bills with at Community Foundation of the Ozarks - WatchingOverWhiskers.org

We rely 100% on donations for our funding. Thank you.

There's one more tiny silver lining in this story, because I didn't know about SNAP providing those vouchers. This can be a big resource for people I talk to, so thank you for this :vibes::itslove:

When I see something like this, particularly when as here it appears the cats were kept inside, I wonder if some family member or friend packed up the cats and dumped them. Did the owner die? Did the family member tell the owner they took the animals to the humane society? Yes, these cats needed more care than they were getting, but it appears someone was trying or they wouldn't have been indoors with the wood stove. That person wasn't up to doing what needed to be done. Maybe that person discovered the wait list and the family member said, "I'll take care of it." Never forget that many family members just want the pets gone and will lie to manage it.
