You might want to check out the foodie corner in the lounge for up dates on EPA's attempt to ban chlopyrifos in agricultural use and who is trying to get an injunction against it. Post #309

In case you've forgotten the details of the what chlorpyrifos does to birds and wildlife see below.

"Chlorpyrifos is one of the most-used and most-lethal insecticides in the United States. It's been killing birds and poisoning American families for the past half-century. It is widely applied in the production of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other conventionally grown crops, including many kid favorites like apples, peaches, grapes, and strawberries. Human exposure takes place when people consume contaminated food and drinking water, touch treated surfaces, or breathe the air near treated fields."

So who is it that's killing millions of birds?

A little something else for birders. Some may remember fighting to get rid of DDT that caused egg shells to be so thin they were crushed when the birds tried to sit on them, some may not. But the fight worked, though, of course, they are trying to bring it back. There is no end to the heartbreak when birds meet humans and corporations.

This one is also bad, as the eagles are being poisoned, mainly, from the lead shot used to kill random animals that the hunters leave in the field, proving they had NO intention of eating them, just killing for pleasure. Mind you, even if gun control is passed it won't stop sport and other hunters from getting guns, so don't pin your hope for eagles on that.

another source for the eagles' lead poisoning.

Nearly half of US bald eagles suffer lead poisoning

By CHRISTINA LARSON

WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s national bird is more beleaguered than previously believed, with nearly half of bald eagles tested across the U.S. showing signs of chronic lead exposure, according to a study published Thursday.

While the bald eagle population has rebounded from the brink of extinction since the U.S. banned the pesticide DDT in 1972, harmful levels of toxic lead were found in the bones of 46% of bald eagles sampled in 38 states from California to Florida, researchers reported in the journal Science.

Similar rates of lead exposure were found in golden eagles, which scientists say means the raptors likely consumed carrion or prey contaminated by lead from ammunition or fishing tackle.

The blood, bones, feathers and liver tissue of 1,210 eagles sampled from 2010 to 2018 were examined to assess chronic and acute lead exposure.

We in the animal advocacy community have been trying to get lead out of shot for yonks. Of course, it's too easy, just like getting safe antifreeze made universal is too easy.

Bald eagles prefer fish, so lead fishing weights are probably more of a threat to them. Of course they'll eat anything (and are kinda lazy) so if they find a lead-shot bird or mammal they'll eat that too. But don't discount lead fishing gear---that rarely comes under fire like lead shot does.

Golden eagles prefer catching their own fresh prey and prefer birds and mammals so it's strange that they have the same lead levels.

I've seen videos of forest rangers arresting people who shot trees with lead shot because it also kills trees.

The way fishing people discard their gear proves how little they care for the planet and those they share it with. The (not) amazing thing is how they are shocked that creatures they weren't fishing for, get caught in their gear and nets. Kinda like steel-jaw trappers who pretend that animals other than the ones they are after don't get caught in their traps. "And anyway, they release all such animals when they check their traps once every week or so."

Yup. What's that they say when it's people? "Collateral damage."
