Hello everyone!

Over the past couple of months I've read a lot here, found so many helpful information and for that I'm so grateful. But if anyone had a case similar to ours, please let me know.

My kitty is 11, spayed female and FIV+. She had through her life weaker immunity and has history of a mild pollen and dust allergy (mostly scratching her skin and eyes, also hot spots years ago), but really mild.

A year ago now, she developed congestion. No sneezing, no discharge, nothing. She was acting normaly, eating. Congestion didn't bother her but was persistent on and off for about three weeks. Our regular vet gave her steroid shot and 7 days on antibiotics and she went symptom free for a 5 months.

Last october, same congestion came again. Gave her steam therapy everyday, bought a humidifier, but nothing helped.
Again, after few weeks off to the vet and steroid shot and antibiotics helped once again.

Unfortunately, congestion came after just a month and stopped but middle of january this year, she started noisy breathing every 5 or 6 days. Sometimes just for 10 minutes, other times couple of hours but end of january it was horrible, she got another steroid shot. I hate how steroids make her feel.

So three days later we went to see more experienced vet in a bigger city and did an xray. Her lungs were really clear but she was given steroid just a few days before. This new vet gave her inhaled steroid and albuterol as needed and diagnosed her with allergy asthma.

Her attacks are still at least twice a week. No congestion, not really much of that noisy breathing, just weird breathing pattern, when she exhales. She never coughs.

I'm using a baby aerosol chamber but maybe ordering Aerokat would be better solution?

I don't have a specialist close, we live in a small european country. So if anyone had similar experience, please let me know.

Do you think that her congestion progressed into asthma?

Also, would you recommend giving Lactoferrin to an FIV+ cat who developed asthma?

Thank you.

Welcome to The Cat Site!

Your kitty has a lot going on. I would think it's possible for allergies to trigger asthma. Do you give her a daily antihistamine? (Are antihistamines available in your country?) That might help decrease the allergy symptoms. What are you feeding her? Is it store-bought or do you make it yourself? Wondering if she has a food allergy to something she's eating.

We use a hard sided carrier draped with a towel when we do breathing treatments with our asthmatic kitty. We use a human nebulizer and hold it up to the carrier.

I haven't had success with lactoferrin for my kitties when using it to treat other things, so I can't help with that question.

I use aerocat spacer for Methos’ inhaler. I also give him 1/4 of a human 10mg Zyrtec twice a day (please ask your vet for advice). Mine suggested Zyrtec one spring when he got a runny eye and I noticed his asthma improved so I spoke with her and she agreed he could just stay on it. He’s not FIV+ though.

Thank you for reading and answering my post.

My vets never suggested antihistamines. Last month I've read about them on this forum so I told my new vet about them but she's not really up for it. We have something the same as Zyrtec and Claritin also so I will see how everything goes because I've seen her congested after a dusty litter, dust around the house etc. So I'm not giving up on that option at all.

She's not really typical asthma case so it's been a hard time for us before we got any proper diagnose. I'm still so upset about those steroid shots, so hard on her. She's really tiny and she's FIV+ so I'm really worried.

She eats store bought wet food and has had some food allergies in the past but then she had skin and gastro issues. Can food also cause respiratory problems?

Thank you for your reply.

Do your cat has typical asthma symptoms, cough?
Do you ever see weird breathing pattern or abdominal breathing when asthma flares up?
I really want to try antihistamines. I will see with my vet about that again.
Sometimes I think if two puffs a day of flixotide is too much but she still has her weekly breathing moments so I'm scared.

He acted like he had a fur ball, but didn’t, for the most part. Sometimes he seemed like he was wheezing. The first several visits the vet (not my current one) kept calling it bronchitis and giving him antibiotics. Finally I said “I don’t know about your profession, but in mine after we say the baby has bronchitis a half dozen times someone finally rules asthma in or out”

its (knock wood) been a few years since an attack, and many since a bad attack. In his worst ones it seemed like he was struggling to breathe using both his chest and abdominal muscles.

good luck, I know how scary it is!

Thank you. Yes it is really scary.
I know that feeling also, so glad I got second opinion.

Also, do you give inhaled steroids still everyday or just now and then?

I give it everyday, but he hasn’t used his rescue inhaler for years (knock wood). In fact last time it was used (I always get one every year just in case), was because a cat with a severe attack was seen in our little town and the vet didn’t have an inhaler but knew I did so I ran it down.
Sometimes I wonder if I could try tapering him off (he was diagnosed prior to my getting insurance so those inhalers are $350) but I’m afraid he will have problems again. I felt so helpless when he was struggling to breathe. That said, maybe 4 times a year I may need to stay overnight elsewhere and I tell the sitter she doesn’t have to give his inhaler if he won’t let her

Hey, I forgot to ask about something. Did you find that antihistamine helped your cat right away or after a couple of weeks of use?

Thank you.
