Is there a song that, whenever you hear it, seems to resonate deep somewhere inside you, and you feel as if the songwriter must have known some deep truth about you when he wrote it? What is that song, and, if it is obscure, could you give us a bit of the lyrics?

Mine isn't all that obscure to older members. For some reason, "Talisman" by the Guess Who sends chills all the way down my spine to this very day.

Talisman

Trinket worn with colours matching saddened eyes has lost its magic touch
People from a distant hill have crossed an ever-stretching sea of sand
Artificial flowers cannot die for life within them is illusion
Talisman, talisman grace my hand
Talisman grace my hand.

Figures made of pedigrees control the non-existent soul of John Smith
Walk the creature let it run but slacken not the rope to which it's bound
Ships in bottles cannot sail and neither can a tombstone kill a feather
Talisman, talisman grace my hand
Talisman grace my hand.

Kings are nothing more without the glory and the wealth behind their thinking
Let me feel the choice of seeing dawn or setting sun before I die
Myriads of painted faces rush behind the eye of the uncertain
Talisman, talisman grace my hand
Talisman grace my hand.

(Recitative)
Let me live only to do
And let me do only to live
My steel image comes with the sun
And that's where it slumbers now.

Talisman, talisman grace my hand
Talisman grace my hand.

I think it really depends on where you are in life at that point. I've had songs that just resonate at certain moments or they just capture how your feeling. I remember as a kid there was this Celtic song about a Mom seeing her son off to war and the pain of him not coming home that I loved. I couldn't tell you who it was by and I have never found it again; it was really obscure and off a mix of songs. But I played it over and over for years. It probably resonated with me at that moment because I had done a school project on Vietnam; my grandfather was MIA (assumed KIA, they found parts of his helicopter but no bodies) in Vietnam. So it may have made me think of how my Mom felt with her Dad going off to war. My Dad also lost his father at the same time to emphysema (no grandfathers for me) and his brother had just died from cancer around that time.

Right now, I'd have to say, The Morning Comes by Delta Rae

Oh, oh. I found a good woman, I found a job that pays.
The tide comes in, I watch it all wash away.
But I'm keeping it steady, that's just how I was raised
Head held up, walking tall into each broken wave

And this heart grows tired
I found a good woman
I found a job that pays
The tide comes in, I watch it all wash away
But I'm keeping it steady, that's just how I was raised
Head held up walking tall into each breaking wave

'Cause the devil's in the details and he's taking his toll
Sending good men down the foot trails of some lost lonely souls

And I say oh, oh
Rain don't change the sun
Jealous is the night when the morning comes
But it always comes

So I'm working the graveyard, I don't sleep till it's light
Ain't calling in favors, I can't swallow my pride
And the bank's on a mission, they want to read me my rights
But they ever show up around here, they're going to be in for a fight

'Cause the devil's in my hometown and I ain't telling him no
'Cause it's my family, it's my love now, that I'm scared to let go

And I say oh, oh
Rain don't change the sun
Jealous is the night when the morning comes
But it always comes

Followed the track of my needle
Tried to be good to my people
So why's there no peace?
No break no relief

Can I be blamed if I'm angry?
Can I be saved if I'm barely clinging to hope?
I'm clinging to hope

When I say oh, oh
Rain don't change the sun
Jealous is the night when the morning comes
But it always comes

It always rains down on us
And like an old dog lying by a new gravestone
It's still our home
It's still our home

So if you ever feel like you are alone
After the night
The morning comes

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
Many songs do this for me..the kind that makes the hairs on my arms raise up.

Mr. Mister Broken Wings has always given me this feeling..

Baby I don't understand
Why we can't just hold on
To each other's hands
This time will be the last
I fear unless I make it all too clear
I need you so

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
And learn to live so free
When we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in
Take these broken wings

Baby I think tonight
We can take what was wrong
To make it right

Baby it's all I know
That you're half of the flesh
And blood makes me whole
Need you so

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in
Take these broken wings
You got to learn to fly
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing

Let us in
Let us in

Baby it's all I know
That you're half of the flesh
And blood makes me whole
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah so

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in
Take these broken wings
You got to learn to fly
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in

And there's times where years go by and then songs just speak to us where in the past we just went on our way.

I always liked this portion of Ani DeFranco's song, Carry You Around:

"How pleased can one
Sun setting make you
If you humble yourself to it?
How grateful can you
Really say that you are
Just to be here and live through it?

And when beauty asks a question
How often do you reply?
How often do you wonder about life on the other side?

On the other side of sorrow
On the other side of rage
On the other side of ok
OK at all in any way

Imagine what loneliness
Will drive someone to do
Now multiply that times me
And multiply that times you

Now imagine what it would take to make
This all happen again
And just when you think you're gonna cry
Multiply that times ten ..."

It reminds me of e.e. cummings' poem, "i carry your heart with me(i carry it in"

which you can read here:
[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in] by E. E. Cummings

I couldn't stop thinking of this song at two particular times in my life - once when my father passed away and again when we had to put our dog of 16 years to sleep. It's by Green Day and called "Time of Your Life."

"Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)"

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right,
I hope you had the time of your life.

I'll never forget the first time I heard The Police- Wrapped Around Your Finger. The lyrics mirrored what was going on in a relationship I was in. I didn't consider myself a manipulative person back then, but it made me realize I had an obsessive dark side I was more than willing to embrace at times to get someone I wanted. I'm still close friends with the guy and we just laugh about what happened now. He's like.....umm...yeah dude...You pretty much owned me by the end of that whole messy experience and for some reason I didn't and still don't hold it against you....

"Wrapped Around Your Finger"

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
And you will see it come to its fruition

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air, you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
Then you'll find your servant is your master

You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger
Yo Ohhh...

My all time favorite song, and makes me cry every time I hear it, is Mothers of the Disappeared by U2.
It has no real personal meaning for me. But I do have friends who's children have joined and are now in the Middle East. With the threat of a draft, and my son being of age, this song makes me cry even harder. But it's beautiful.

Instead of trying to type it all out (I have a kitten on my lap), I just posted it here. Hope you don't mind.

I first heard Roberta Flack sing "Killing Me Softly With His Song" while going through an intense time in life. It raised goose-bumps then and still takes me back every time I hear it. The Fugees version done years later is well-done, but it is the Roberta Flack one that really does it for me.

Lyrics
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style
And so I came to see him to listen for a while
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish but he just kept right on
Strumming my pain with his fingers

Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

He sang as if he knew me in all my dark despair
And then he looked right through me as if I wasn't there
But he just came to singing, singing clear and strong

Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I don't mind at all, and if I could have found my song, and if I knew how to post them like that, I would have. LOL...as my father used to say, "If I had some ham I could make a ham and cheese sandwich if I had some cheese."

I agree that certain songs hit a certain note at different times of life. "Cat's in the Cradle" came along when my children were very young, and to me, it was a warning to my husband, who paid no attention. In the end, he became just like the dad in the song.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say, I'm gonna be like you, dad
You know I'm gonna be like you

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw, I said, not today
I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed
Said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
Son, I'm proud of you
Can you sit for a while?
He shook his head, and he said with a smile
What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later
Can I have them please?

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you coming home, dad?
I don't know when
But we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

It's pretty easy. The easiest way is to find it on You Tube. Highlight and copy the URL (http:// whatever is here). Come back to your reply here. Use the media icon on top. (the little thing that looks like film). Paste URL and click embed.
Once you post reply, it will show up properly.

Chasing Cars, I believe is one of the most beautiful love songs of all times. I dance with all
my cats and that was the song Kirs and would dance to whenever i came on. She passed
away on 7 October, 2016.

Chasing Cars
Snow Patrol

We'll do it all
Everything
On our own
We don't need
Anything
Or anyone
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?
I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel
Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life
Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads
I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden
That's bursting into life

To me, there are several...it may sound dark, when you look at the lyrics but I absolutely love, James Taylor and "Carolina, on my Mind"

In my mind I'm gone to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind

Karin, she's a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shine
And watch her watch the morning come
A silver tear appearing now
I'm cryin', ain't I?
Gone to Carolina in my mind

There ain't no doubt in no ones mind
That love's the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
And hey babe, the sky's on fire
I'm dying, ain't I?
Gone to Carolina in my mind

In my mind I'm gone to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
And, ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind?
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind

Dark and silent, late last night,
I think I might have heard the highway call
And geese in flight and dogs that bite
The signs that might be omens say
I'm goin', I'm goin'
I'm gone to Carolina in my mind

With a holy host of others standin' around me
Still I'm on the dark side of the moon
And it seems like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me, if I'm up and gone to
Carolina in my mind

In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine?
Can't you just feel the moonshine?
Ain't is just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Yes, I'm gone to Carolina in my mind
Gone to Carolina in my mind
And I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind
Goin' to Carolina in my mind
Gone, I'm gone, I'm gone
Say nice things about me 'cause I'm gone south now
Got to carry on without me, I'm goneWriter/s: JAMES TAYLOR, JAMES V TAYLOR

Another song I heard over and over again after losing my father and my dog was Turn, Turn, Turn by the Birds.

"Turn! Turn! Turn!"

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late!
