The Rape of Nanking by Irish Chang. It's unfortunate that even to this day the long list atrocities committed by Japan during WWII is still so unknown

I completely agree!

I was going to say that too but since you mentioned it I'm going with The Scarlet Letter. It's considered a classic novel that we had to read it in high school and although controversial for some I was captivated by it.

The Diary of Anne Frank, I think its original title was The Diary of a Young Girl. In a way it is the classic coming of age story but against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation.

I hated both of these books.

My mind keeps going to The Giver as my suggestion.
