As most you that have had experience with blocked male cats that need the PU surgery, you know the toll it takes emotionally and financially. Max was blocked a couple times and mutliple vet visits by a few different vets because we didnt care for how they diagnosed amd to treated him. We found a urinary specialist surgeon and are thankful we found them. They are very pricey but are good in this area. Long story short, he was cleared by them tongo back to normal a day ago. No more cone!! But soon after he got home, he licked and apparently had an open sore still right near his new opening and turned red with minor blood. He had a scab there before and figured out how to use the cone to scratch his sore. So it has been an issue of it being an open sore then scabbing, then open again. Another reason i believe the open sore is not healing is because after he pees I notice theres some pee on the wound. So its not healing even if everythung go well with him not licking at all down there with a cone still on. The open sore is to close to his opening so using any kind of bandage or cream is not a good idea. Ita being stuck in a hard place, he should be peeing, but him peeing seems to be keeping the wound from healing. The vets advise is keep the cone on which i have but it dosent seem to help if in fact his pee is keeping it from healing. Has anyone had this issue? Ive searched the net and couldnt find a issue like this.

Hi! Welcome!!
I'm so glad you found a vet you like!
What a quandary - can you possibly try a different cone?

I've been there. My late cat had the surgery at the age of 6. The person that did the surgery botched it and they had to re-do it, so it's good you found someone that is a specialist. When I first brought my cat home from the surgery, it licked the area (with the cone on) and it started bleeding. Be careful because if the area bleeds and it heals weird from it, there could be problems. My cat had strictures and had to have the surgery redone. I don't think it was necessarily from the bleeding, I think it was from the bad surgery job, but I would still be cautious. The better the healing, the better the long term outcome for the cat being able to pee with ease. When my cat's surgery was re-done, they kept him at the vet for 10 days with a catheter in to make sure it all healed open without anything irritating the healing (such as urine). I think my experience was abnormal, and your kitty should be fine, but just know there are options such as a catheter for healing if things start showing signs of trouble.

Welcome to TCS. Thank you for sharing your experience.

It is crazy how many people on this forum have stories to tell about cats having PU surgery. What's really interesting in reading these threads is even when a catheter is inserted, the patient still as a stricture risk.

I may be reading into this incorrectly because of a few sedatives, but it sounds something like he developed a mucosa. Tom ended up with one. It was a second hole under the surgical site that needed to close up on it's own. Surgeon said no issue as long as he doesn't get it infected and then we would have to close it surgically. I left his cone on for 4 weeks, because at 2 weeks, he was grooming too hard, so I gave him a little more time. At four weeks, he overgroomed himself raw, and came to me asking for help. I gave him some snacks (he's a foodie) and spent as much time with him as he needed, and the next day he learned not to do that again. He hasn't been raw since.
I'm going to try to thumbnail you the two week photo

I found a cone that works better so that he cannot use it scratch. He has healed up great, all stitches out, just a small pink spot right near his opening where it seems pee is getting on it to prevent healing. Small parts on the edges have scabbed up since my first post but he is still bothered by it.

Also, he seems to be squatting so hard to pee hes making himself strain some. He was on muscle relaxers for a couple weeks to help. His last checkup, everything looks fine with no sediment in his pee, just that hes straining by clinching.

Hi I see this post is a few years old, my cat seems to be having a similar problem as yours and the vet seems to think I should just leave the cone off. Can I ask what ended up happening with your cat??

The OP has not been back to TCS since August of 2018 so will probably not reply.
