So I come home from work today, and Mr. Fluffytail is waiting for me on the steps outside, as usual.
I sat down for a moment to scratch his head and say hello, and along comes my neighbor, walking her two dogs.
The first dog was not really much of a concern; a little Yorkie or something similar, half the size of kitty, that was off the leash and happily ambling around. Kitty hardly even looked at him.
The second dog was a different story. A young, strong boxer that looked to weigh at least 80lbs, this dog wanted to eat my cat for dinner. I know this, because her owner told me! As the boxer strained at her leash, the owner announced, "Sorry, my dog wants to eat your cat for dinner." Thank God that one was leashed!
So what does my cat do? Run inside through the cat door? Run away? Get the h*ll outta there like any sensible cat would do? No way... he sits on the steps, locks eyes with the dog, and enters into a stare-down with this huge boxer!!!
I couldn't believe my eyes! I was thinking, "are you CRAZY? Why would you EVER mess with a big dog like that?!!!"
At this, of course the dog starts yowling and growling and pulling at the leash. Stare-downs are serious business in both the feline and canine communities! At this point the owner says, "Come on honey, let's get inside before the leash breaks again."
!
So what does my kitty do at this point? Walks BEHIND ME, settles into pounce position, and continues the stare-down! I'm sure he felt nice and safe with me as a buffer between him and that huge dog! Anyone ever hear that story about the two guys who meet the bear? He doesn't have to outrun the bear, he just has to outrun the other guy, right?
So, of the five mammals involved in this situation, I decided to be the most reasonable. I took control, went inside and told kitty to get upstairs.
He was walking around for a few minutes with his tail as fat as my calf after that one!
Can you believe the nerve? What cat stares down a huge dog like that?
