I've taken this kitten to the vet before and they prescribed a medication and told me the problem would go away by itself. But that problem hasn't gone better after months and seems to be getting worse. Do I need to take him back to the vet, should I be cleaning the discharge myself? Should I be worried?

Welcome to The Cat Site! What a lovely little orange boy he is. Yes, the vet needs to know that the original prescription did not work. Whatever your cat has might be resistant to the first antibiotic. An eye infection or condition that does not clear up as you have described is not going to get any better on its own.

Yes he needs to go back, somtimes it takes more than one visit to get the right medication. If it was going to clear on it's own that would of happened by now. You can wipe his eyes gently with warm water to clear any discharge, and help him feel more comfortable while he's waiting to see the vet.
