So it's pretty unlikely she's mated if she's only been out for half a day? Also can I not find out whether she is or is not pregnant before 3 weeks pass?

There is no 100% reliable way to determine whether she is pregnant before 3 weeks. You can do an ultrasound earlier than 21 days, but it won't be as reliable. Looking at her nipples and behavior can give you hints, but is also not very reliable -- some pregnant cats don't "pink up" and act pregnant, while other cats "pink up" and act pregnant but it is a false pregnancy.

Spaying her is 100% reliable, though.

Edited to add: I realize I didn't answer your first question. If she was in heat and got out of the house for half a day, it's quite possible she is pregnant. Cats can get pregnant if they are only out of the house for 5 minutes, if males are hanging around out there.

Females in heat WILL find a male. And unless you live on a deserted island, there's a male cat somewhere nearby. So it's best to assume she mated. If you have her spayed in the next few days the eggs will not have implanted yet, if that's a concern.

I'm glad to hear she's back.

She may well have mated. The best thing to do is to make an appointment to have her spayed within the next few days. That way even if she did mate she won't be pregnant yet.

You should also have her blood tested for FIV and FeLV, which are fatal, sexually transmitted diseases. I suggest you keep her apart from your other cat until this has been done, just in case she picked up anything that could harm him.

Here are a few places you could call.

Please don't delay doing this any longer. There are far too many unwanted kittens in the world, it's a terrible idea to allow her to have a litter with either your male kitten or a feral tom cat, especially after losing her first litter and being a stray herself.
