My vet suggested trying to add water to the dry food and letting it soak up or trying to grind up the dry food and add some water to it.

Have you tried freeze dried like Stella and Chewys? It's a different smell/flavour. There's also FreshPet which is "wet kibbles" if that makes sense. ($11 and $6 for a small bag respectively)

My other recommendation is to try kitten food. It smells stronger. You can also try heating it up and/or blending it through a blender (I use a Baby Bullet).

My biggest success was adding water to a pate and blending until it becomes still sticky enough that a cat can take bites and hand-feeding. Not force feeding, just holding it up. Magnus gets too distracted to eat and so I do this for him, to get Calcifer to try new foods (he loves food, but new wet food is suspicious) and to encourage Ghost to try wet food for the first time.
