Anybody have any neat tips for your gardens?
  • Most plants prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6 and 6.5.
  • To test for soil acidity, moisten a soil sample and add a pinch of baking soda. If it fizzes, the soil is very acidic.
  • To test for soil alkalinity, add a few drops of cider vinegar. If it fizzes, the soil is alkaline.

wow, that's a very interesting tip!

i'm in temp zone 5 and am able to grow gladiolus as perennials. my tip is that to grow glads as perennials in colder temp zones, plant them on the south side of the house and close to the house (within about 3 feet). i'm not sure how this would work in colder temp zones, but my glads are on their third year and are making more/new plants now.
