I did a search and read several articles on feline herpes - thank you very much. My plan going forward is to get some better cat food and add VetriScience DMG. Not sure if I should continue to use the antiviral drops and/or antibiotic drops.
Here's the story:
We adopted a 6 month old spayed female DSH "Lovey" from the local shelter on Sept 24, 2022 and she had clear eyes and looked healthy. Over the course of the next week we noticed that she started sneezing and then her left eye would be partially closed with a little discharge and black crusties. Not sure if I would call it squinting, just a little limp/closed all the time. No green discharge noticed.
We had a mobile vet stop by on 10/18 and prescribed an antibiotic eye drop Tobramycin. We gave Lovey the eye drops one drop in her left eye only, twice a day for 5 days, per Vet's instructions. That really didn't do much.
Then we started with a sterile saline solution one drop in her left eye twice a day. It seemed to get a little better, then not, so after 8 days we stopped that and took her to an eye specialist.
On November 29 we took her to an eye specialist who diagnosed her as having feline herpes and conjunctivitis OS and prescribed an antiviral eye drop Idoxuridine three times daily in both eyes. We did this for three weeks with no improvement. So we stopped those eye drops and went back to the saline solution.
Then she started having green discharge so we went back to the antibiotic drops 2x day and that seems to have cleared up the green stuff but still a little squinty and some clear discharge. We stopped the antibiotic eye drops yesterday 12/25.
And now I am just cleaning her eye 3x day using a warm clean wash cloth.
Then I came here to The Cat Site to read about other's experiences and will order some VetriScience DMG and get her some better food.
For food, when we picked her up she was eating the "Blue" brand of canned and dry food however my wife didn't like the smell of that so we switched over to Friskies canned and Purina Kitten Chow dried food. I will be looking for something that is a little better for her that my wife will be OK with.
She eats very well, drinks very well, and uses her litter box a lot so I clean that twice a day at least. My wife thought the clumping littler might bother her however we switched over to the pellets with no change in her eye symptoms so we are back to clumping as the pellets really smelled bad.
So if anyone else has more recommendations I would appreciate that! Thanks!
Lovey is a very very affectionate and playful kitten. No stress at all in her life. I wanted to call her Herbie the Love Bug but my wife didn't like that name so she is Lovey. She squeaks the tiniest meow more like a chipmunk and she is a real rascal too so I wanted to name her Buckwheat or Alfalfa. Super quiet and very lovey. Likes to curl up on my lap and take a nap or lie next to me and nap. Loves to have pets and body contact. Just the most amazing lovable cat we have ever had (our last cat was a Tortie and you could lose a finger if you weren't careful when you attempted to pet her).
