So for the past few months my 8 year old fixed domestic shorthair male cat has been experiencing some health problems and despite multiple vet visits he’s still not at 100% and I need some advice.
So in August I tried to switch his dry food to a higher quality dry food and I did it too fast and it caused him to develop severe diarrhea. One evening he was trying to poop and kept screaming so I brought him to the ER vet because I was worried he had a UTI. He didn’t and the vet gave him medication. Then that same week he went 3 days without peeing and I brought him back to the vet they said he didn’t have a blockage and did a urinalysis test and said everything was normal and gave him more medication. It took another week or so before his poop finally went back to normal.
Then in late September/early October he began to develop little scabby bumps on his neck and down his spine and began to scratch and bite himself like crazy. It got progressively worse and I took him to the vet on November 2nd and they said it was allergies. They gave him a shot of steroids and an antibiotics shot.
Now his bumps have cleared up and he’s not really scratching himself as much. However he now has pretty bad constipation. He strains when he poops and isn’t pooping very often. He went 3-4 days without pooping and finally pooped today. His poop was very hard and then he had a little bit of yellow diarrhea. He’s still eating and drinking water and seems to feel better after pooping, but I’m just so tired of the constant vet visits. It seems like it’s just one thing after the other and I can’t afford to take him to the vet and spend $250 every month. I feel like at this point maybe something is going on that’s causing all of this, but I’m not sure what and I don’t want to take him to the vet again and have them throw shots in the dark and guess and run a bunch of tests for no reason.
His vet is the highest rated vet in our city and I doubt I would be able to get an appointment in anywhere else in the near future. I feed him high quality food he gets one 3 ounce can of wet food (typically Wuvera or tiki cat) and 2 small handfuls of hill science diet dry food (vet recommended it) per day. I’d like to get him on only wet food, but I’m having a hard time finding wet food hell eat that isn’t fish. He’s had issues with overgrooming for years now (usually just on his front legs in neat patches or on the base of his tail) that the vet has blamed on anxiety, but now I’m starting to wonder if it could also be an underlying issue. He has a few of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism (he’s crazy hyperactive and always has been), but he’s never had an issue with weight loss. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do or what could be going on?
