Hello! So my barn cat, Nala, gave birth to 3 kittens 5 days ago. I went to check up on the kittens and she wasn't in there, and when I called to her she didn't come. Is it normal for cats to leave their kittens for a little while? I'm not sure how long she's been away from them.

Yes, it’s normal, particularly if she must go look for food. Do you feed her? She needs extra food, both wet and dry, while she is nursing her kittens.

Are the kittens crying? Do they seem hungry or cold? If so, you may need to intervene.

Exactly.
She will be able to stay with them more if food and freash water are supplied nearby.
She will basically only leave to eliminate.

You can tell when a cat is not really or hardly caring for her kittens if they seem unclean, scattered some, etc.
If what you are seeing when she is away are snuggled together sleeping babies then she is a good mom, just needs a bit of help with food and water.
