What is the healthiest brand of bonito flakes? I see that Cat-Man-Doo is popular, but for every 1 ounce of Cat-Man-Doo Bonito flakes there are approximately 32 milligrams of sodium. Is this safe?

1 oz of bonito flakes is a HUGE amount. They weigh nothing. The XL bag of Cat-Man-Do bonito flakes is 1/2 oz. That sodium figure is for 2 whole bags of flakes.

Just don’t go overboard with the flakes (or any treat for that matter) and it likely doesn’t matter which brand you go with.

If it's an option, Asian grocery stores sell huge bags of bonito flakes for nearly the same as a small container from the pet store. Bonito flakes are commonly used in Japanese cuisine.

Any treat should be given in moderation.

Yes, any and all treats certainly need to be given in moderation. I've ordered bonito flakes and will be careful with them. Thanks to everyone here!

daftcat75 is right. :)

1 oz. is the same as 28.3 grams.

1 milligram is equal to 1/1000th of a gram.

So... the amount of salt in 1 oz. is the same as 34 ÷ 1000 ÷ 28.3 = 0.00120
That's a little more than 0.1%

Look at it another way... There is 832 times more bonito flakes than there is salt.

Basically, this is the amount of salt that is naturally in seafood.

Bonito fish do live in salt water, you know! ;) ;) ;)
