The Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery has a new published article in this month's issue discussing commercial diets vs homemade and the pros and cons of each, advantages of each, and potential problems of each. It also tells the differences of commercial labeling between North America and Europe.

It's a very good read. I like the case study at the end that describes a kitten with an abnormal gait and reluctance to walk and it turns out that the kitten was being fed an imbalanced diet of raw and cooked meats which resulted in nutritional deficiencies. The kitten wouldn't eat commercial food so a veterinary nutritionist came up with a proper balanced homemade diet. It's understandable why many vets discourage homemade diets. Many people don't think about what a proper homemade diet for a cat or dog is and many vets aren't fully aware of what a homemade diet should consist of or what good resources they can point clients to for more info.
