Hi all

Hope this is the right place for this post. Quick background. We had 2 cats a few years apart Tigger & Jack. We got Jack after Tigger and its all he has known. Last year Tigger unfortunately passed from Cancer. He was put too sleep at home and we allowed Jack to go and smell Tig, once he had gone. He seemed fine and has been ok if not come out of his shell since. He was always in the background when it came to fussing as Tigger was more dominant. Jacks turned into the most fussable lap cat ever since then. We both work and maybe it might be time to get him a friend to keep him company during the day, trouble is were really not sure. Would he get annoyed, would he go back to feeling second best. Any opinions would really be helpful as were so 50/50

Thanks all

Paulus

I'm so sorry about your loss of Tigger, it hurts very deeply to lose such a wonderful companion and family member. I hope you use your precious memories of him to bring comfort to your heart. RIP dear Tigger.
You will have to use your own knowledge of how Jack would feel about a new presence in the house. Does he seem content, or restless? Does he seek constant attention and seem overly glad to see you when you come home? Many cats, especially older ones, are very content to be an only cat. But a lot of it is up to you. Are you ready to accept another? Sometimes, especially in the case of young kittens it is better to get two so they have a playmate while growing up. Older cats become annoyed with the constant, never ending energy and playtime of kittens. But the distraction they provide is good to keep boredom at bay, and eventually he may even join in. If you decide to get an older cat, strive to observe them first, maybe over a couple of visits, you don't want to get a bossy, high energy, overconfident cat if Jack is more laid back. A male would more likely become a pal, females tend to get bossy and diva like when they get older. Good luck on whatever you decide and keep us posted!

We have found that when we bring cats in we have issues with the existing ones accepting ones their age or older, but when we brought in younger ones most recently Stanley it was a very smooth transition, but each situation is different. Like Di and Bob said maybe an older, laid back cat would be a good fit.

Good luck with it!

Rest you gentle, Tigger, dream you deep. You walk in someone's heart forever.

Just make sure that you find a cat with a gentle, laid-back disposition, and one who is accustomed to living with other cats. Some have better luck with younger cats, others have better luck with cats of the same age, but disposition is going to be key here! You want someone who isn't going to be a bully.
