I think Miss Harriet is getting one and she'll be going to the vet soon and at the shelter we usually prescribe ayciclovir (an anti-viral).

I was just wondering what treatments you guys have had success with?

I have never heard of that. I have given Clavamox and Amoxi depending on the age of the cat or another one that starts with a B and is a large purple pill, can't remember what it's called though.

Jen, I believe you are thinking of Baytril. At the shelter here, we use Clavamox & if that does not work, we then try Baytril. We also treat the kitties eyes with Teramycin if they are "goopy".

Baytril yes! I just drew a blank. Is that for UTIs too? I think that is what I got it for in the past, I am pretty sure it was a purple pill.

Yeah, I gave Ophelia Baytril for a UTI. The shelter here more commonly uses Clavamox pills, mostly because they're cheaper.

Do you know how long a bottle of Baytril lasts before expiring? I just found a bunch of them while looking through my box of cat stuff. It's about a year old. They were in a tiny glass bowl with a lid.

I *think* most bottles are good for 2 years...not sure though. It depends on when the Baytril was manufactured. If it was manufactured 2 years ago, then it expired by now, but if you bought it right after it was manufactured, then it could be good still. I know it's going to be flushing money down the toilet, but I would flush those pills!

I hope your baby feels better soon. My kitten Lusa is struggling with this, too. Her URI is caused by Feline Herpes Virus. Our vet prescribed eye ointment and a supplement called l-lysine. You can get l-lysine in pill or get/paste form (we use the gel).

Since it's been hanging on for a while, the vet started her on a twice daily oral antibiotic. Lusa's nasal discharge looked a bit greenish which indicates some secondary bacterial infection.

I've been told that keeping the cat in the bathroom with a hot shower running can give them some relief. The steam helps to break up the congestion.

Does anyone know just how old a cat should be before starting on the acyclovir?
