I seem to be the resident question asker at the moment, but after reading through all the wonderful responces I got (and the other threads on cat food) I would like to know more on this whole raw food diet thing (for future kitty, not me).

Can someone explain to me how the whole raw diet works? I don't want to turn my life inside out to feed raw, but I am getting the impression that not only is it better for the cat but it is cheaper...is that right?

My questions:
~Is it cheaper?
~What kind of meat do you buy?
~Can you buy this at a normal grocery store?
~Do you have to blend it in a blender(I ask b/c I don't in fact own a blender)?
~Do most cats convert easily to raw?
~What are the advantages over wet food? Are there any wet foods that have a high meat content that could come close to raw dieting?

Ok, I think that's all my questions for now.

I works via mimicing the natural diet

For me and my little animals yes ... for big dogs it is the same as dry with some wet

~What kind of meat do you buy?
Beef chicken rabbit
~Can you buy this at a normal grocery store?
You could but it likely is not organic or truely natural
~Do you have to blend it in a blender(I ask b/c I don't in fact own a blender)?
no but a grinder for doing your own is good
~Do most cats convert easily to raw?
Depends on the cat
~What are the advantages over wet food?
I buy 2lbs ready done chubs and supplement s cost is about 10 dollars a week for the two that eat it ... I spent double that feeding canned
Are there any wet foods that have a high meat content that could come close to raw dieting?
Yes and no mainly no as the enzymes and best parts of raw are raw all canned food is cooked

I find pre-made raw is a good way to get into it. It's already prepared for you, complete with everything needed, and frozen so all you do is thaw it out. I find it about the same or a little less than feeding canned food only when feeding the pre-made stuff.

Making it at home on your own is cheaper, but also more complicated. You'll need a grinder, a good source for quality meats, and you'll need to be well armed with informaiton, to make sure you're doing everything right.

When I first started reading about raw feeding here I bought some of the Nature's Variety Prairie Raw Medallions. That reminds me, I need to throw those out of my freezer since my guys looked at me like I was offering them poison they weren't about to touch.

I also tried giving them a skinned, raw chicken wing for a treat since so many cats go crazy for such a thing. The outside feral thought that was great and all my others again acted like I was trying to give them poison.

Needless to say, I have to stick with the high quality canned and dry, which is a darn sight better than where I started.
Since i lean toward laziness, it's much better for my fur-babies that I do it that way anyway.

I believe that if you have the discipline and dedication to your pets to feed them raw, then more power to you. If you are looking for the easier softer cheaper way then maybe you should think about all the pros and cons a little more.

There are many knowledgeable and wonderful people here that will guide you, but you still have to do the footwork.

Good Luck with whichever way you choose to go!
