I read a while ago about the idea of taking a rubbermaid tub and turning it into a extra large litter box. Luna is very picky about a clean litter box and the small one seemed to get too full of waist for her in no time. We moved not too long ago and had quite a few of these boxes left over with nothing in them. So I thought, why not? So today I switched over our cats littlerbox to the new one that I made for them. I cut the interace hole in the top to try to help with scattering litter. They've had no accedents so far and from what I can tell they really like it. Anyone else done this?

What we're trying right now is those under bed totes that you get from wla-mart for about $10. So far, the cats like them. It's short enough for the kittens to go in and out of, too.

I am trying to picture this--would it just be the rubbermaid with a whole cut into the front? Do you keep the lid on it?

That sounds like it would contain all that kicked around litter and be really easy to clean.

Can anyone upload a picture of this contraption? Sounds like a good idea!

Mmkay. Here's my new box. This is the cat corner of the bedroom.

The cats still haven't went outside the box or anything, so I guess they like it! One thing though, I have caught them playing in it. One will get in and the other will get on top and they'll swing at eachother. I like it!

Wow, I wasn't picturing that in my head, thanks for the picture!

Did you just introduce it to the cats like any other litter box? Did they know how to use it since they now have to jump in and out of it?

Interesting...very interesting!

We have 2 clear totes for our boys - we've always used them, they are so
handy!!

Plus, we hardly get ANY litter on the floor from the boys, as Harley LOVES to be a litter flicker when he's in there. The higher sides are perfect, especially as he used to scratch at the walls when we was done using the 'potty', he now just scratches @ the sides of the tote - saves my walls!!

We don't put the tops on them tho, we just leave it open.

And they are really cheap to replace too!

I hit my cats with a double wammy and replaced their litter box and moved it's location all at the same time. I just set them in it, and they both used it instantly. They're both suckers for clean litter. Throughout the day I picked both of them up and put them in the box, just to remind them where it was. They don't seem to have a problem jumping in and out either. I did have their other litter box in a large dog crate before so they were used to it being covered. Another thing I thought I'd mention is that I have two cats, and everyone recomends having a litterbox per cat plus one. I don't have the space for that, so an extra large one seemed like a good option. Also, I think it's almost cheaper or the same price to buy one of these storage containers than a regular litter box.

Ok I have always been a die-hard dog person, and not that I am posing a mutiny on my beloved Labrador (who is frollicing Over The Bridge), but the idea of a pet who not only can handle teaching himself potty training, but also will make the effort to jump in and out of the "bathroom" just blows my dog-lovin' mind!

When I owned dogs, not only would you have to mind read to be able to know when they needed to go out, but then all factors must be in place (no rain, clean ground, right smell, a slight westwardly breaze)!

To own a pet who will use a Rubbermaid...wow! Forgive this dog person's amazement at self sufficient pet ownership!

I think I am turning into a cat person!

Isn't it GREAT!! My husband an I were initially going to get a dog, and now I'm so happy we didn't! Cats are so easy!

Yes I have seen companies selling these called CleverCat and asking about $30 or so when you can do just this and make your own for a lot cheaper.

I have moved recently and I have cut a hole in the front and took the tops off just to have higher boxes because my boys like to stand up and urinated and then they get it on the walls and floor. Well ... they still aren't high enough so I need to find taller containers or do like in the picture above which I have heard is great for not tracking as much litter too if I can get them to use it.
The rubbermaid is pretty thick. The ones I have were cheap and thin so it was easier with a hand saw.

We made our own geriatric litterbox four years ago for our two cats. One liked to hang her bottom over the edge and the other had a hip problem and couldn't climb over the walls of the litter box. This solved both problems!

I can't post attachments yet (what's up with that?), but we used a huge Rubbermaid container with lid and cut out a square on the side with an exacto knife.

When we got a new kitty, she loved the litter box so much that she went to sleep in it! And boy, does she throw the litter around, so it's worked great for us.

It also doesn't look like a typical litter box and people don't even notice it.

Cheers, from

I had to switch to a rubbermaid tote too..Trout loves to pee along the corners of the box, and in a regular box, the pee would get in the crack where the top and bottom meet..and needless to say, I always had a uriney mess to clean up every single day...SO, we switched to the big tote and just cut a hole in the top..cut about half the lid off, and she just jumps into it from the top..we both like it better
No more nasty pee mess for me!!

The cats love it!!!
Thanks for the idea!!!!

I took a quick picture of the big group of boxes and we have a few others around the house.
You really don't notice it's a cat box!

Poo where? like smeared around or your cat pooed? Haha. I don't think I ever had problems with poo, my cat always buried it real good, so neurotic... would dig a little ditch, kinda push it over and in, bury it, take a wiff, bury some more, take a wiff, bury some more (at this point its like a little mound), take a wiff, then daintily run off. Even if she stepped over it, there was so much litter on top she never had a problem with getting poo anywhere. Would be pretty nasty if it did happen though... imagine little paw shaped poo stains somewhere in the house...
